Thompson was vilified by many Americans for his testimony against United States Army personnel. He recounted in a CBS “60 Minutes” television program in 2004, “I’d received death threats over the phone…Dead animals on your porch, mutilated animals on your porch some mornings when you get up.”
This guy intervened during the murders and rapes of innocent women and children and he was vilified for it. They wanted him hanged for treason. America is evil and a majority of soldiers will just follow orders.

Under US law, military personnel basically have no way to refuse an order since they themslves can’t determine an order to be illegal. Only military court can do that and that can take from months to years while for all that time they will suffer real consequnces for refusing to comply with an order from their superior. Also if military court determines that order was lawful they are fucked. Also since US learned from Germany’s aftermath, compyling will illegal order is the affirmative defense for them if they are accused of war crimes or other evil deeds.
There is a good video on this from a real judge advocate general (JAG): youtu.be/TwPLqGkYnBA
