The software is free. The server to host on is not. All Fediverse instances cost money to run. Every user costs money. Requiring one time “donations” is kind of misleading. More than that, its in sustainable. I signed up at Communick, because they’re upfront about the annual subscription. That’s the only way the Fediverse can work without adds or sponsorships.
