I’m not sure it’s fair to say that they couldn’t afford it, but they couldn’t afford undirected research.
Even if they hadn’t gambled it all away on Videodisc, RCA would have been gutted by venture capital and then the brand sold to a cheap electronics manufacturer anyway.
