Comment on Time to start over...Thoughts on Umbrel OS?

Use whatever works for you, but I avoid specialized OSs like this. Headless is the way I go. If you want a GUI use Portsiner, or Dockage, or Arcane.
Headless with all of my yml files backed up for easy spinning up on a new install or device.

Don’t use portainer. They are rapidly enshittifying.
Dockge is what I use for Docker. It works alongside existing Docker environments and doesn’t fuck up the structure.

what is enshittifying? is it monetization? Is Portainer a paid app/service?

Portainer is clamping down on their “free” licenses. It used to be free to use, then they changed it to 5 “free” licenses, now 3. You can see where this is going.

Portainer is a webinterface for managing docker containers on your server. One of its disadvantages is that it kind of holds your docker-compose files hostage within its own system instead of storing them in sensible folders that would be accessible from other management apps. Dockge fixes that issue as far as I am aware.
Personally, I still use portainer because that’s what I started out with and I haven’t gotten to migrating yet. If I were to set up a new server I would use dockge, arcane or dockhand though.

Good to know! I have not used a front end for docker in years.

Dockge is also developed by the same guy who does Uptime Kuma.

why, though. how is it easier?

Lower resource usage running headless and having web apps if I need a GUI. Makes it more portable, less dependencies
