Comment on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer
@couldhavebeenyou @Seralth If they have internet, you don't really need to. Get a seedbox account at ultra.cc, which also allows you to install the *arr suite and Seerr as well as your choice of Plex or Jellyfin.
Once that's all setup (it's a bit of effort, particularly the arr setups), the Plex/Jellyfin server is exactly like a private netflix, which you can use Seerr to add basically any show or movie you want to it.
This is much better than trying to set them up on a vpn that you won't be there to handle the problems.
That said, ultra.cc also provides Wireguard as an installable app, so you can connect via wireguard, if necessary.

Ah ok. So to avoid them having to access mine over a vpn, I just get my grandparenys to checks notes rent a seedbox and host their own server Brilliant I’ll get gramps some docs so he can read up on how to roll his own shit then
@couldhavebeenyou I give friends and family logins on my Jellyfin server, since you need it explained in detail. Likewise you login to seerr at a different address than Jellyfin/Plex with the same credentials.
So, my dense amigo, it's no more complex than saving a couple urls and a set of credentials from the perspective of the old folks.

And they can install an app on their tv that connects to your jellyfin server over a vpn?
@couldhavebeenyou If the Jellyfin app on their tv is not absolute shit, yes, BUT because you are connecting to a seedbox, VPN is optional. In the case of my ultra.cc account, it's in Amsterdam, so I don't even get the annoying emails that they send here, if they see you on a torrent.
My wife does her requests through Seerr, and they either show up automatically or sometimes I need to go poke them on the radarr/sonarr server. We use a laptop plugged into our TV and watch movies in a fullscreen browser window.
The best JF experience is with the builtin WebUI, but there are good apps out here for the phones, not sure about the TVs cause my perception is they are all awful. But ya, whatever app, you point it at your cloud account's jellyfin URL.
WebUI instances do very good at DLNA casting, and I have also found Kodi to be a pretty solid DLNA casting target, so up in the bedroom I have historically kept a Kodi box which either of us can control from our phones.
RIght now, I plugged in an older AppleTV box, and I'm planning to rip it out, cause the JF apps on it are a fucking nightmare. Apps are always a gamble now.
edit: my jellyfin server is on the open internet at https://revjtoad.dagger.usbx.me/jellyfin/, I don't care if people know, the only thing to steal in there is already stolen lol
So it's basically your personal netflix.
