  The german government had an interesting idea for that. Collecting all the emission taxes into a common fund (like sales tax on each item) and then paying that back to the citizens, the same amount to everyone. If you get the emission pricing right, then rich people (who emit more through their life) will pay more tham they get, while poor people will profit from it.

  Though the system is not yet active (because of shit financing tricks that got stopped by the courts and the current inability of the government to actually pay that money out to the citizens)

  I don’t know where you are from, but usually, taxes are a way to put money for the community and to redistribute it. In France, it happens with our social safety (health, unemployment, allocations) and to help companies (there is a lot to discuss about this specific point, but it is outside of scope).

  Within a liberal economy, you don’t want to forbid abruptely, so you increase the price of something polluting to finance a greener economy.

  Now, why this does not work is because capitalism is broken and sending us all to death in war and global warming and because we have corruption problems be it in France or the USA or wherever.

      If a government raises taxes for something so that working class people cannot buy it, that government becomes richer by exploiting the working class.

      1. If the working class cannot buy it, then they are not getting taxed. If the government is making more money from implementing that taxation scheme, then all that money has to come from those who are wealthier than the working class.
      2. You only become richer if you hold on to the money. The government’s job is to spend that money to the benefit of its constituents, not hoard money.

      In the past there have been ice ages while the atmospheric CO2 level was 10 times higher than it is now.

      Implying we want another ice age?

      The notion that eating insects will save the world seems a little dubious.

      Governments don’t become “rich”, and if they do, that either signals unchecked corruption, or a government that is investing wisely in the nation’s present and future, depending on where the money is going. This may seem contradictory, but the reality is, you need a much deeper and broader understanding of your government’s finances and economic plan before the accusations you’re making will hold any weight. This is not something that can be reasoned about in the abstract and addressed with news-bite talking points. It a hugely complex situation and people spend lifetimes studying this.

      A government that is genuinely exploiting the working class should be replaced by the working class with a government that supports and protects the working class. If you do not have the power to choose your government, then you need to figure that out how to organize the working class and acquire that power first, otherwise you’re wasting your time trying to change a government you have no control over, and that’s not going to work and it’s never going to support and protect you.
