Comment on Is 3G getting shutdown in Africa?
stoy@lemmy.zip 20 hours agoYou don’t have to be a pedant to treat countries with respect.
Have you even read the wikipedia articles about telecom in the different countries?
Here is a link to the article on telecom in Ethiopia:

How is my post not treating Africa with respect.
We don’t hear about the continent much in the news.

Because you’re treating every country as one thing.
As a westerner, even I find that demeaning and offensive.
Every country is its own thing. So even your question is crap, because you’re asking about a continent when it’s a country-level question.
Even asking this of the EU would be meaningless, and at least they have a more common plan about things than an entire continent that doesn’t have a single government (not that the EU is a single government, but it enables engagement and joint planning).
Plus, the info you want is easily found on Wikipedia or a simple search.
I never did paint the whole continent with a broad brush, my intention was to hear the stories of how different african countries are developing their telecom infrastructure. I brought up Eritrea as an interesting example. There is nothing wrong with using old technology, I still use cassette tapes.
Offensive to care about a separate continent? I’m curious about every country even the small ones, Africa has lots of interesting history. You’re acting like a spoiled college white kid who claims that likeing other culture’s food is “cultural appropriation”
You shouldn’t rely on wikipedia for everything. Also it’s good to talk to locals about how their technology is affecting their country. Africans want people to talk about the issues effecting their countries especially Sudanese people.
