I’ve heard (on reddit news articles posted to r/technology, so not exactly the most reliable source) more than the profit for the initial sale of the tv because they actually subsidize the initial price and may sell it at a loss to get those ads in your livingroom.

To get them to stop they need to lose both the original sale and the additional advertising revenue. Right now their thinking is:
There is no downside for them. Only upside. The equation needs to change for them to stop doing it.
