Society doesn’t prioritize knowledge for it’s own sake. It prioritizes making money. If society was different, more people could pursue hard sciences.

Science is proof that 99/100 people who think that if there was a knowledge-based magic system irl, then they’d learn it and be a mage is in denial.
We legit have magic that you just have to learn & then can do all sorts of cool stuff, be it chemistry or computer science, and people pretty routinely do not give a shit about learning it themselves.

I know, its really a shame about all those low paying STEM jobs. I remember back when I was a kid I used to tell everyone I wanted to be an engineer when I grew up, but all the moneys in literature and poetry so thats what I had to do. Damn you, capitalism!

There’s a difference between being an engineer and being a physicist. One deepens our understanding of the universe and the other uses our understanding of physics to build products. One is clearly valued more by capitalism.

Because the average researcher is SWIMMING in money right?

Science is also for artificers.
Also people aren’t necessarily able to monetize their interest in science. Maybe if there were no barriers in the like people needing to pay for education, food, shelter, education, transportation, medical care, and the air they breathe then maybe a larger portion of those people would be the mage they want to be or at least closer to it. As it stands you are right, but things can be different than they are right now
