The story in my opinion is editorializing by giving Elm a specific flashback of his father at a time when their relationship was still good.
I suppose you could argue we were not supposed to take anything away from that flashback.

I think what we were shown was that he was a hothead with a hate boner for weird builds. Was Isaac a bad parent for that? Of course.
