A lot of beachings started happening around the time that we started using sonar for detecting other ships and submarines. 50 years ago implies during the cold war. The loud sounds can rupture their eardrums or confuse them enough that they beach themselves repeatedly. Also it’s a possibility that the cause for the initial beaching hasn’t disappeared.
