There's no ranking algorithm — the difference is a setting called "Followed Content Scope" (Settings → Social Networks). The default is "conversations my follows started *or commented on", which pulls in posts by people you don't follow whenever one of your contacts replied to them. If you want only posts your follows directly authored, switch it to "only conversations my follows started".
