I created an account on two different servers. One only shows me responses to my posts here. The other one shows me posts from people I have no connection to.

There's no ranking algorithm — the difference is a setting called "Followed Content Scope" (Settings → Social Networks). The default is "conversations my follows started *or commented on", which pulls in posts by people you don't follow whenever one of your contacts replied to them. If you want only posts your follows directly authored, switch it to "only conversations my follows started".
