We don’t have downvotes
Comment on Hexbear federation megathread

Actually had my first conversation with hexbear the other day. Accidentally came from /all and didn’t realize what kind of sub I was in. While I don’t really have their same beliefs, it was interesting to see things from another point of view. Had a swing of upvotes and downvotes as to be expected.

Oh okay. Either way it was a more interesting type of conversation than I normally have online. It wasn’t bad at all.

You do, hiding them doesn't mean they don't exist. As long as you're federated you will have downvotes.

Note that when Hexbear users do this it is often perceived as brigading because we are such a large instance and so active.

I had logged back on recently after a while of inactivity, and didn’t even know these were other instances

Must have been from another instance. Hexbear removed downvotes because some transphobes were using sock accounts to manipulate votes and create a hostile environment for our trans comrades. This has the added effect of encouraging people comment if they disagree rather than silently downvoting. In the short term, it makes threads as chaotic as this one, but in the long term, everyone gets a more nuanced understanding of the various issue even if they don’t come to an agreement.

It wasn’t all downvoted though. Prob had more up than down which is a win in my book lol
