As a questionably-sighted individual myself, I can fully appreciate an expert not wanting to feel perpetually half useless in a time of extended stress and crisis. Seriously, when all the world becomes a Monet painting it is a very different experience than when you can make things out with definition and clarity at reasonable distances.

Something like reading glasses wouldn’t always be worn and could fall out of a pocket. Also considering they were commandos they could also hide it away while sneaking up/infiltrating to avoid dirt/reflection or ease of recognition.
