- Comment on More than 75% of popular takeaway and restaurant food is unhealthy, study finds 5 months ago:
That sums it up well.
I’m all for research, it’s good to have proven methods to say “hey, this is not healthy”. But this is a no brainer. I always assume that even a healthy option at a restaurant is worse (high fat, high salt, high added sugars) than anything I’d make myself.
Nobody is kidding themselves into thinking any of these places are healthy.
- Comment on Biden urged to ban China-made electric vehicles from the US 9 months ago:
International competition is really amazing, it can drive innovation and make governments spend a ton of money on good things for society. It’s probably one of the biggest pros.
But the US banning Chinese products (more than just cars) only delays the inevitable. China is producing cheaper products. Are they better? I can’t really answer that, since I don’t know. But I’d be willing to buy a Chinese EV. US auto industry would collapse if China was allowed to enter and honestly, we deserve it.
The US is going to go through a strange and difficult transition when we are no longer the world leader on R&D.
- Comment on Gaps in Philippine medical system force patients into debt, healthcare workers to leave for work overseas 10 months ago:
In the Philippines, you have to pay the hospital before receiving care. If you don’t pay, you don’t get treatment. This includes emergency.
- Comment on Pre-teen pregnancies are rising in the Philippines – critics blame the Catholic Church 10 months ago:
Probably both. From my limited understanding the country is so poor, sex tourism of girls (and probably boys) has become normalized.
- Comment on Pre-teen pregnancies are rising in the Philippines – critics blame the Catholic Church 10 months ago:
I cannot believe an article like this would use the language “girls falling pregnant”. Nobody falls pregnant.
- Comment on Diego Garcia asylum seekers feel unsafe on remote British island territory 11 months ago:
My ex was stationed here many years ago. He spoke fondly of all the Filipino workers that lived on the island. He never mentioned asylum seekers. So either it was long before they aren’t or they are not near the military base. The island is not big though. I would imagine any reports of a sailor messing with civilians would not be well received by the navy.
- Comment on No stupid questions edition: Pokemon Go 1 year ago:
Spoofing location will eventually earn you a ban if your not careful.
I’ve come to accept that it’s not great for privacy. If I’m not planning on playing for awhile, I’ll delete the app. But as a busy person who loves Pokémon it doesn’t have a huge time commitment so I can play when and how I want. It brings me joy so I keep it.
- Comment on No stupid questions edition: Pokemon Go 1 year ago:
Pokémon Go is my last hold out of absolutely stupid amount of permissions needed to run an app. But I love the game, so I keep it There’s no real replacement within the Pokémon series. Of you want to play Pokémon specifically, and don’t want Go, you could get one of the games for switch.
I don’t know if any other app that would be like Pokémon Go. But I can say that you can limit some of the sharing by not enabling adventure sync. That asks you to share your location all the time in order to hatch eggs when your game isn’t specifically open. You can also avoid spinning sponsored stops/gyms.
You could also delete the app when you’re not playing, then download it when you want to play. Or you could buy a cheap phone(s) and use a hot spot to play the game. This will keep the game off your main device.
There’s not a ton you can do to limit the amount of permissions it asks for.
