I'm just your average Canadian arctic wolf. I'm a siren enthusiast and railfan as my main hobbies. I run the Civil Defense Sirens Wiki, and am working on restoring a few vintage sirens (such as a FS&S Model L and a rare Sterling Siren MOD. F) as well as a 1970s Safetran mechanical crossing bell.

Explains why this thread is nothing but tumbleweeds for me. Blocking Hexbear was the best decision I’ve made on Lemmy.
- Comment on [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism? 1 week ago:
I said this on another thread posted by a very antagonistic vegan: Acting holier-than-thou, smug, and hostile is not a good way to convince people of your arguments. It pushes people away and biases them against you and the argument you’re making.
Far too often I see vegans outright shaming and harassing people for choosing to eat meat, or acting smug and superior because they are making “the right moral decision” and everyone else is lessor for thinking otherwise.
Now, if I came here acting the same way, but I was championing eating only meat and shaming others for eating vegetables, I’m sure vegans would be upset for the same reason.
It’s gotten bad enough that a lot of people (admittedly myself included) are put off by vegans and their arguments. Not because the arguments don’t have merit (they certainly do) but because enough vegans have acted antagonistic or smug that they get shunned for it.
If you really want people to listen to you, you need to frame it from a friendlier and more down-to-earth position and not come across as hostile. The human mind tends to close itself off immediately when faced with hostility.

This might not be a “stupid” question, but it sure is a loaded and leading one that for sure isn’t in good faith. Welcome to my block list, enjoy your stay.

It’s almost like being extremely antagonistic and smug doesn’t convince people of your arguments and just puts them off…

Yeah, that’s kinda the point. It’s a euthanasia coaster for those who want to die painlessly while having the ride of their lives.

Wikipedia rabbit holes are a hell of a drug.
- Comment on cowabunga 2 weeks ago:
I read that it would give the riders time to think things over, in case they realized they didn’t want to die. The coaster would allow for those who change their mind to get off and descend once reaching the top of the hill, I think there was supposed to be a button riders could hit to signal the operator.

Children can’t do that if you’re a responsible parent that keeps an eye on what their child is doing. Y’know, the bare minimum of parenting.

The right keeps moving head over heels to defend and support shitty people, instead of admitting that perhaps they’re not people worth defending when they prove themselves to be consistently awful. It’s not a good look for the right.
I don’t get why that’s a difficult concept to understand. Bad apples spoil the entire bunch.

Exactly! Letting problematic instances poison the well leads to a net negative to the platform.
- Comment on Lemmy.ml is acting as a proxy instance for Hexbear and should be defederated by any instances that defederate from Hexbear 1 month ago:
nor how letting a large, poorly moderated instance run wild can negatively affect discourse on the entire platform. Before Hexbear was defed’d on lemmy.ca, Lemmy was damn near unusable on many threads because of the spam and trolling. Blocking them doesn’t stop them from bothering those who haven’t and it affects the platform as a whole.
