- Comment on AI ‘apocalypse’ could take away almost 8m jobs in UK, says report 7 months ago:
Exactly. I keep hearing this “they’re taking our jobs” argument, and it’s been going on for a long time. The people saying this are not lookng at the stats of how many people are now employed compared to 10, 100 years ago. From the industrial revolution onwards, it’s been generally an upward trend.
- Comment on UK network operators ask govt to fend off attacks on fiber 8 months ago:
It’s the best characteristic of English, I think. It’s alive, it changes and we do very little to prevent that from happening (unlike French or German).

It was handy until I realised it installs to the user profile instead of system-wide. Reverted to chocolatey.

regularise users to a proprietary intermediary management system.
I don’t understand what this means.
- Comment on Why is 2010s movie Star Trek called the Kelvin timeline? 9 months ago:
Because the first thing Nero does when he arrives back in time is destroy the USS Kelvin (the ship where Kirk’s father is killed), and thus setting that universe off onto its new timeline. It could have been called anything, but someone decided on that one thing.

Exactly. These things should not have been named or their faces publicised. They should not get attention.
- Comment on Does Harry Potter only know fifth grade math? 9 months ago:
I think that’s a bit over simplified. Do you think they’d be able to understand Shakespeare? Or a spell book from the same time as Shakespeare? There’s a reason we continue to teach English until a child leaves secondary/high school.
- Comment on Does Harry Potter only know fifth grade math? 9 months ago:
I think the OP meant that if they all stopped learning maths at 10, and there was no English class at Hogwarts, they probably stopped learning to read at 10 as well (well, the Muggles anyway, there’s no mention of how the Wizards learn anything before 11 I don’t think?).

- Comment on Giving blood exception 11 months ago:
There’s a bit of nuance here. Mad cow disease (BSE) was a big deal, yes, but vCJD (the human form) was not prevalent - as of a few years ago, I think there was less than 200 cases in the UK, and less than 250 cases worldwide - ever. As it can be dormant for decades they believe, it’s why the UK population and visitors at those times is not allowed. Keep in mind, in the UK we do still donate blood - we don’t have to import it from elsewhere. But as it’s such a horrific disease, it’s easier to just say “No one from the UK can donate blood.” it’s not like it would impact other countries blood supplies, and keeps them a bit safer.
- Comment on What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on and why? 11 months ago:
An OpenVPN profile generator with valid client certificate and the private key never leaves the client workstation.
Client browser logs in with their IPA creds + OTP. Browser generates key pair and CSR (all stored in session storage) Node requests certificate for user from IPA using CSR, returns cert to browser. Browser combines new certificate with CA cert and the private key into the OpenVPN profile. Browser downloads the OpenVPN profile file.
- Comment on How send emails trough CLI (Windows) ? 11 months ago:
I don’t think you need to learn it, you just need to use one command. Even from a CMD prompt you can invoke powershell and a powershell cmdlet in a one-liner:
powershell send-mailmessage -from “me@somedomain.co.uk” -To “me@someotherdomain.co.uk” -subject “Test to me” -smtpserver My.Mail.Server.co.uk

- Comment on Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries? 1 year ago:
That’s unexpected.
I’ve never thought about it before. In the UK getting your balance is on every ATM. The ATMs are all different makes and models, interfaces, OSes, different banks, etc. the only thing I can think of that is the same is they are all connected to LINK - maybe they have set standards for what they should all have/have not?
Anti-feature: you must enter your PIN before it shows you the menu. Does that mean it connects to my bank even in the absense of a transaction?
This is the same in the UK. They request your PIN immediately after putting in your card (althogh I think if you use a credit card it will prompt for your language first), but it doesn’t use it until it needs to connect to your bank (I know this after knowingly mistakenly putting in my PIN, then attempting to get my balance or something and then the card is ejected and the message about incorrect PIN appears).

- Comment on How would I start as a database consultant for a niche software? 1 year ago:
Do I just need to start cold calling companies that based on their name “might” have this software as well, and explain my case?
So, as someone who works for an MSP that specializes in a certain vendors products, it’s maybe worth checking out the websites of who may be your competitors. They love to put their clients names on their websites. This should help you at least start building a list of companies to target (LinkedIn is heavily used by sales peoples these days).
