This + org-mode are enough for me to switch to Emacs.
- Comment on Reddit now blocks signed out VPN connections. 11 months ago:
It was VPN issue for me. Some IPs in Proton VPN doesn’t work. When I tried a different IP or turned the IP off, I could access again.
Well, but most of the time I don’t care enough to go in.
- Comment on Elon Musk on X antisemitism controversy: “Don’t advertise. Go f*** yourself” 11 months ago:
The different servers, having to remember other people’s instances along with their username.
This is just like email, I see no problem here.
I think the problem is about the mindset and the onboarding experience. We’ve used too much proprietary products and prefer something easy and not too much diverge from the norms. Recently, I tried to advertise Mastodon and Lemmy to my non-techie friends, which are using X and Reddit. Some did try but gave up. They said they didn’t understand the concept, and didn’t want to bother with choosing an instance in the first place, because they didn’t understand the federation concept. It’s just hard to explain the benefits of the fediverse to non-techie people.
The type of people that the fediverse attracts are FOSS users.
I have the same observation as your view. Current fediverse communities are heavily towards tech. Some of my friends joined but gradually left because they had a few to no interactions or no interesting people in their interested areas to follow.

I learned the lesson: keep the hope low (so I don’t get disappointed), and never preorder.

- Comment on Why Bother With uBlock Being Blocked In Chrome? Now Is The Best Time To Switch To Firefox 11 months ago:
That’s interesting to know. Maybe that’s why add-ons don’t work in Firefox iOS or iPad OS.

+1 for Kagi. $9/month is well worth every dime, considering that searching is one of my main workflow. Google search results are now full of rubbish—ads, SEO-boost junk articles.
- Comment on It's never been a better time to switch to Firefox 11 months ago:
Use Vimium add-on and have a pop-up to search your open tab.
Or if you prefer no add-ons or don’t know how to use Vim keybindings then type your search query in the search bar like this:
% my tab title

Joke aside, for an open question I’d prefer posting on Reddit/Lemmy/forums to have an open answer.
SO is too strict on its policy.

Generally, I would feel there’s a void after playing something special. The emptiness after finishing the game is hard to describe.

Ugh, my feed in Lemmy is full of this now. Is it feasible to “lower” the visibility of a keyword like “Musk” or “X”?
- Comment on They use to tell us we couldnt trust Wikipedia. Now we know. Wikipedia is the only website you can trust. 1 year ago:
Not fully trust, but I trust it more than some listicles and low-quality SEO-boost sites.
When I want to learn something new, I often come to Wikipedia, or Britannica, or YouTube to get to know the subject. And generally, they will recommend me with some valuable reference to dig deeper.

So Reddit would go from a social open hub, the “front page of the Internet”, to a walled garden? Ridiculous.
- Comment on What is your favorite programming language? 1 year ago:
Clojure. It’s just fun to write.
Firstly, it’s functional and “Lispy”. My code is super expressive. Writing code is like writing prose where I can choose a word (function) from a large vocabulary [1]. I can focus on high-level concepts and modifying states instead of fighting with low-level logic.
Secondly, it runs on JVM - an already robust and performant platform.
And there are so many good things that I cannot simply write in some words. The father of Clojure, Rich Hickey, is a genius in expressing Clojure’s design. You should check out some of his talks [2].
Too bad that Clojure is too “niche” that I haven’t got a chance to make a living by writing Clojure, yet. But learning it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my career. Yes, it’s that good.

Good advice only for tech-savvy and people who are interested in self-hosting. There’s so many things that can go wrong like improper backups and accidental networking problems.
- Comment on Google Podcasts to shut down in 2024 with listeners migrated to YouTube Music 1 year ago:
Why is Google trying to follow the model of Spotify even though the model is not really successful? I hate when browsing my music in Spotify some podcast pops up. I just want to listen to my music, dammit!

May I ask why?
Personally, I find its UI/UX is annoying. The quality of the sound is awesome, though.
- Comment on Google killing Basic HTML version of Gmail In January 2024 1 year ago:
This, for example I love Proton Pass so far. I completely replaced my Bitwarden with Proton Pass. It (Proton Pass) has built-in 2FA authenticator, password generator, Firefox extension, and email generator to hide my email address.
Not happy with Proton Calendar (pretty basic) or Proton Drive (doesn’t support auto-sync, yet) but I’m patiently waiting for them.
- Comment on Google killing Basic HTML version of Gmail In January 2024 1 year ago:
+1 for Proton Mail. The other day I have switched to Proton (from another mail provider in Germany) and love it so far. I can even use a language to customise my filter [1], how cool that is!
Not in a million year that I will come back to Gmail.

Let’s be honest, even if you finish that 600-page book, you might not “crack” the algorithm interview. The inteview requires you to grind the question, or simply a lot of practices.
- Comment on Easy peasy 1 year ago:
From my personal experience, AWS is extremely powerful (especially on security and networking). If you cross the learning curve, and know automation or Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform) then it’s fast and easy to build almost any architecture.
But yes, it’s overkill for a simple website or a simple setup (if one is not familiar with AWS).
- Comment on Markdown everywhere 1 year ago:
Markdown is good. I use it when working in the company since the format is ubiquitous. I do writing my blog posts with Markdown (Hugo for the curious).
But personally, or working with a bit more niche team, for writing personal documentation I prefer Asciidoc [0]. It has better syntax and have some nice functionalities like Table of Contents.
For personal notes, nothing can surpass Org Mode [1].

- Comment on Which conditions would make reject or quit your job? 1 year ago:
I usually check in with myself:
- Am I growing in my career?
- Am I happy with my current workplace: people, culture, flexibility?
- Am I valued to the company, i.e. my opinions are considered and regarded to some certain?
If one or two of these conditions failed, I would consider moving. After all, if I went to a workplace and I didn’t find any joy or recognition, the paycheck wouldn’t make me stay.

True, on my feed there are too much posts from “Meme” even that I don’t interact with it often. So I unsubscribed the community. Maybe I would consider subscribing it back when the recommendation system is a bit better.

Actually this is a good practice. If you don’t know where the program is or if the source is not open, you shouldn’t install blindly.
