I’m curious to see what the quality is like. If it’s a similar case to the Enviro hat, fantastic.
If it’s like the other cheapie thermal sensors on alibaba, less so. - Comment on UK 'set for rapid rise in cases' of fatal lung disease linked to kitchen revamps 6 days ago:
I can only imagine how uncomfortable a respirator would be in 40 degree heat. Still better than silicosis!

It’s funny like that, isn’t it?
You catch lightning in a bottle in 5 minutes using Reaper, then spend 100x the time on another song that just vanishes.
Peaches most popular song was a tape recording off the sound desk in a German bar.
- Comment on Will I ever be seen as truly British? 1 week ago:
You will be truly British once you register on feddit.ukIn seriousness, I like to think it’s a state of mind. If you find yourself generally aligning most with the more positive British attitudes, you’re British. Though living in Wales, you may end up feeling more Welsh eventually!
If you want to feel more connected, try getting involved with local festivities and traditions.
Explore the countryside with the Ramblers. Do some pub quizzes. Go to a folk festival.
The sorts of things that involve you with pleasant people. - Comment on Prime Video subs will soon see ads for Amazon products when they hit pause 1 week ago:
This is one of the reasons I went to Apple TV for my streaming box.
All the streaming services seem to be in a race to make the slowest, worst looking, least consistent application possible. And Apple at least has a bit of a hand in making them reign it in a bit, and keep the players consistent.
“ooh, we’re averaging only 75% cpu use, we can cram another shitty effect in here…”
- Comment on Marc Conway risked his life to stop the London Bridge terror attack. Why did he fear being sent to prison for it? 1 week ago:
Re-summarised with another machine:
Marc Conway was an IPP (Indeterminate Sentence for Public Protection) prisoner who was released on license. In 2019, he helped stop a terrorist attack at Fishmongers’ Hall in London, but feared he would be recalled to prison for his actions.
The IPP sentence was controversial and abolished in 2012, but those still serving it remain on indefinite licenses that can lead to them being recalled for minor infractions.
Another former IPP prisoner, Andrew Morris, had a similar experience of being recalled to prison despite trying to turn his life around.
The IPP sentence has been described as the “greatest single stain on our criminal justice system”, with many former prisoners suffering from mental health issues and even committing suicide due to the uncertainty of the never-ending license conditions. - Comment on [deleted] 2 weeks ago:
It’s the same with machine learning.

This is pretty much what happened with HomeAssistant. Tying all the integrations together in one platform.
It’s now at the stage of “copy these files to a pi/buy this box we make”
The overall aim is to integrate most open things, and find ways to work with/around more closed off products.

If any federated banning networks do pop up, I’d expect them to form groups, with different groups having different standards. And the idea being that if someone’s banned from one place with similar standards, the rest of the group probably wouldn’t welcome the content.
It’ll come down to places and groups being reasonable, and not banning for stupid reasons (at least by that group’s standards). And if they are unreasonable, it’ll reflect on the group, as nobody would bother posting to those instances any more.
And in a way, the ultimate “ban” will be with the host instance, similarly to email.
An admin at lemmy.world might get a report that an account is spreading csam links everywhere, and to consider banning them, for example. - Comment on trains 3 weeks ago:

It’s got to the point in linear television where the only money-makers are sports, and cheap production quiz/reality shows.
Even when you have a drama that captures the nation, it’s tricky to make a profit on it. - Submitted 3 weeks ago to unitedkingdom@feddit.uk | 13 comments

The fibre is a special level of “fuck you”, as the altnets are deliberately leaving the mapping as late as possible, to gain a competitive advantage.

- Comment on Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy? 4 weeks ago:
Honestly? It’s tricky to find communities that give you a spread.
I can recommend picking a community that has a secondary alignment with you (for example, country/state), as they’ll tend to pick up posts in All that may be of interest other than politics.

One of the things I really hate about the whole situation, is that the pension funds are trotted out as a puppy.
“But if you default this company, then all these people will lose money on their pensions.”
Says the fund who bought into a water supply company and then (I assume) said nothing when plans for huge dividends based on loading it up with debt were announced. - Comment on Inside the UK's First Open-Access, Pay-As-You-Go Factory 4 weeks ago:
It’s a slightly different concept.
My local space is very much “join the community, pay the contribution, and help us maintain things/train people”.
This is more “pay for a service, and receive it”.And quote honestly…I think unless you have a very bombproof community with lots of dedicated people and free time, a more commercial PAYG system may be more effective!
There has definitely been a drift in mine, with more and more skilled members getting fed up, and just leaving to buy their own gear. - Comment on Schools Were Just Supposed To Block Porn. Instead They Sabotaged Homework and Censored Suicide Prevention Sites 5 weeks ago:
This is kinda how it’s done for a lot of schools in the UK.
RM and SWGFL do the filtering systems, and schools pay subscriptions to use them. They’re not infallible, but as there are a large number of schools subscribed to the filters, false positives/negatives are generally ironed out over time by the herd.

All that effort to roll out barcoded stamps was well worth it then.
I would assume that the barcodes makes it far easier to find fakes. Unless they’re just simple serials, in which case they’re a bit boned.
