- Comment on What's the best way to measure the size of the government? 3 months ago:
Government spending/revenue as percentage of GDP is the common proxy for government size. That said actual empirical evidence doesn’t lead to clear cut conclusions about the relationship between economic growth/outcomes and government spending. It’s very much dependent on the country, quality of government institutions and components of the expenditure.
Intuitively, you can clearly see that if you had 2 identical countries where 50% of gov spending went to building schools, hospitals and roads in one and paying interest on national debt in the other then you would expect very different outcomes with the same government “size”.
For the US, that metric has been close to 30% for the last several decades with spikes during crises like 2008 and 2020 (changes to money supply or “minting” is a component of government size but usually a temporary one). It’s been relatively stable outside of that since the 1970s. tradingeconomics.com/…/government-spending-to-gdp
Relative to the rest of the world’s rich countries it’s on the lower end:
In my view, it’s highly dependent on the quality of the government institutions and components of spending. People immediately think of inefficiency and bureaucracy when governments are brought up but there is empirical evidence to show that gov spending on things like education and infrastructure are usually “productive” in additional to contributing to factors that may not be properly captured by measures like GDP growth.
In short, people reducing government spending/regulations as inherently bad/controlling are at least not being completely honest because it’s a very complicated discussion.
- Comment on CrowdStrike’s faulty update crashed 8.5 million Windows devices, says Microsoft 4 months ago:
They have about 24,000 clients so that comes out at around 350 impacted machines per client which is reasonable. It only takes a few impacted machines for thousands of people to be impacted if they are important enough.

Depends, some people see it as what is the most accessible (eg. Prusa) while others want affordability (eg. Ender 3 and clones) and most want a mix of both.
- Comment on What does cigarette smoking do for people? 1 year ago:
I could go until the late afternoon without eating with the power of nicotine. I would say it’s about the same as coffee but you can smoke more frequently than you can drink coffee (usually).

Nicotine feels great. It’s why I still crave it after giving it up a while back. Everything else involved is horrible but there’s a reason people get hooked to begin with.
- Comment on How is it that we hate the taste of coffe and still drink it? 1 year ago:
I happily drink instant coffee. I even prefer it to something like Starbucks coffee.

How is a GPU that performs the same as an existing GPU for the same price (old MSRP doesn’t matter today) being spun as an “antidote” of any kind?

Hey, yes there that is an option. You can DM @Demigodrick@lemmy.zip for the wallet address and he’ll convert to fiat and add it to the OpenCollective page for transparency.

- Comment on Server Rundown Part 6 1 year ago:
Yup, just click on your username on the top right, select settings and scroll down to Themes
There you can set your own selection that will ignore the instance default. In this case the old one was darkly or lightly (depending on your browser being dark or light mode I think?) so either of those will be what you’re looking for.

If you filter by Local then you would see anything from the communities here even if you aren’t subscribed to each one but if you filter by Subscribed then you only see stuff from communities you are subscribed to here and elsewhere.
