- Comment on Low-level floppy operations with native floppy controller on older PC with modern Linux distribution 2 weeks ago:
As much as “Buy more equipment” is an unfortunate answer, I’ve given up with native floppy drives in modern computers. I do sometimes use an intermediate machine as a bridge box, but mostly have it down to a few gadgets:
- A greaseweazle (FOSS, preassembled for $30ish) for reading and writing physical floppies.
- A gotek drive emulator flashed with FlashFloppy (github.com/keirf/flashfloppy) (open source firmware for a sub-$30 commercial device) for feeding images directly to machines that covers most things.
- A FloppyEmu ($130; expensive but delightful) for feeding images to Apple machines.
It’s mostly a good solution, and the first $60 gets a lot of reach if you aren’t into Apple stuff (which has always been a bit of an issue, even at the time).

I initially didn’t do enough of that in my PhD thesis (CS, about some weird non-frame-based imaging tech that is still only of academic interest), and my committee demanded I add more stake-claiming favorable comparisons to other tech to my introduction before I submitted.
- Comment on On the off chance someone hadn't heard of it - Fujinet is amazing! 1 year ago:
I have an ESP32 set up with Zimodem which just makes the ESP32 act like a Hayes modem that talks IP instead of phone numbers to the serial port. They’re a ton of fun.
FujiNet appears to offer a little bit more in the way of high level service translation. - Comment on Any advice on rooting an Onn tablet? 1 year ago:
A year or so ago I screwed around with an older/smaller Onn Surf 8 (100071485), the punchline is ignore the awful android hacker crapware and use the open source MTKClient to talk to it. I haven’t wholesale flashed it with a ROM or anything, but I have rooted and de-crapped and such.
There is a sad little subforum on xda for them, which at least is enough to see that it looks like the Gen3 ones are still Mediatek parts and the same approach should work.
