Oh good, someone finally built the Torment Nexus. I was so worried that the title “Don’t Build the Torment Nexus” would have put them off of it.

Like I think that’s the thing that pisses me off the most about this - Sony clearly didn’t give two shits about this game on launch with servers underprepared and overwhelmed for weeks after, but as soon as they smelled money they were more than ready to shit where Arrowhead eats with this godawful requirement.

Yeah it’s not just the fucking internet, doc. The world’s on fire, capitalists own everything that hasn’t been burned to the ground yet, and they’re leasing it out to the rest of us at a rate that ensures we’ll die in debt.

- Comment on What are some common misconceptions about programming that you'd like to debunk? 9 months ago:
I know they make a joke about Tom in office space being the one who brings the specs from the customers to the engineers - as much as it looks like he’s dead weight, there really is a skill in being able to explore the customer’s needs (and frequently manage their expectations of what the proposed software should be and do) and parse them into something more technical for the engineers, because you might not know how to program, but you’ve got a good idea of what the capabilities are because you communicate with the engineering team on a daily basis.

Wow, I’m shocked anyone else has even heard of that game. I wish we could get a remaster for modern machines, it was strikingly beautiful in places.

I can. My fellow countrymen are fucking idiots who literally believe every lie they’re fed as long as they get it from someone with the magic ® next to their name. The intended result of having a dogshit educational system.

Devil’s advocate, but parts of the Trek universe have shown that there are non- or quasi-sentient creatures capable of endangering starships like the Enterprise, in addition to the usual spacefaring hazards like asteroid belts and debris fields, and the potential to encounter, for lack of a better term, space pirates. It makes sense to arm the ship for a number of reasons not necessarily related to the power of coercion via the threat of violence. The Enterprise’s weapons are also frequently outclassed by other ships of similar size designed for combat. It feels more akin to packing bear spray or a noisemaker to scare off wildlife, and the bear spray gets used to drive off a robber.
That said, the threat of violence against a better-armed foe in order to prevent combat is a trope the shows rely on frequently, so you have a point.

When I started at the company I currently work for, my then manager saw how hard I was working and negotiated an 11% raise on my behalf during my first annual review, and another 10% following. She was cool as hell and protected me from the upper management bullshit that was going on at the time. She left because they had her working 65+ hours every week for a CEO who was/is pissing away the company’s capital and goodwill with clients.
My current manager is the bullshit, I haven’t had a raise since she left three years ago and I’ve been looking off and on for something else while I steadily lower my effort to be commensurate with my effective pay.
