- Comment on Signal downplays encryption key flaw, fixes it after X drama 4 months ago:
Microsoft was claiming that the data would be inaccessible to hackers (which is not true).
Signal claimed the exact opposite: that once it’s on your computer, messages can be seen by malicious programs on your computer.
Signal was caught having less than ideal security. Microsoft was caught lying.
- Comment on Bluesky and Mastodon users are having a fight that could shape the next generation of social media 9 months ago:
you can’t move that account somewhere else.
That means you can migrate between servers and keep all your friends and followers, something that’s currently not possible in the Fediverse.
It absolutely is possible to move accounts between instances on the fediverse. I’ve done it multiple times.
It does have some quirks tho. Posts aren’t migrated to your new account. (Some fedi software lets you migrate posts, but from what I hear it’s kinda jank).
It’s not seamless, but the option is there, and you won’t lose any friends or followers (unless they’re defederated or something)
Bluesky accounts seem like they’ll be more portable than fediverse accounts but I don’t know much about it
- Comment on Tear Down Walls, and Build Bridges 9 months ago:
It’s a crawler that ports things from one platform to another without consent from the user. If either of them are unethical and should be blocked, then both should be blocked.
- Comment on Tear Down Walls, and Build Bridges 9 months ago:
I understand blocking this bridge, but if admins do that, they should block other bridges too, like bird.makeup

There are ads on the app store, which I’d consider to be part of the “primary operating system”, especially since it’s the only way to install apps.
Not to mention constant ads for icloud. In the photos app, and even notifications from the settings app. (It’s possible to turn these off, but not easy or intuitive).
After switching to Android, I haven’t seen a single ad in the operating system, (I think Play Store does have ads, I just haven’t got any for some reason). The closest thing is Google photos sometimes asking me to turn on backup.
- Comment on Pornhub blocks North Carolina and Montana as porn regulation spreads 10 months ago:
At this point vpns are popular enough and have enough ads about them that most people will be able to look up ‘free vpn’ on the app store and download the first one that comes up. They’re not difficult to use at all

(assuming that’s what they mean by “the fediverse”, the use of which was the first big hint that humans didn’t write this text)
What do you mean? Do humans not say ‘the fediverse’? I’ve seen plenty of people use it. We are even in a community called fediverse
- Comment on Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integration 11 months ago:
See what? Posts from threads? Depends on your instance and how you browse.
Lemmy has no microblogging features so you won’t be seeing any (unless they’re specifically posting to Lemmy)
Kbin I’m not too sure since there are microblogging features but idk how they work.
Mastodon; you will see posts from threads users if you follow them, or if someone you follow boosts a post from them.
If you browse by the explore/posts tab, you might see some threads posts. Also from the ‘All’/federated tab.
You’ll be able to block threads for your account, or choose an instance that’s defederated. - Comment on How many of you actually use the headphone jack on your phone? 11 months ago:
I always used it when I had one.
Now, I use an adapter for headphone jack to USB-C. Every day.
- Comment on Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integration 11 months ago:
I don’t agree at all here. If someone on threads has posts you like, you can follow them. If not, you won’t see any posts from threads on your feed.
Your feed will either be the same as before, or better than before.
- Comment on Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integration 11 months ago:
What do you mean discovery feeds? Like the federated/all tab?
Because those feeds only show posts that the instance knows about, which is (mostly) posts from people that at least one person on your instance followed.
If you check the all tab on a small instance, it’s a lot quieter than it is on something like mastodon.social.

There’s probably a way to do it in browser with ublock origin or another extension.
On android, ReVanced.
- Comment on Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns Android Users Not to Sideload Apps 11 months ago:
For F-Droid in specific, you’ll need an F-Droid client. I use Droid-ify (GitHub) (F-Droid) (IzzyOnDroid), but you can use whichever you prefer. F-Droid is a good source for open source apps.
If you’re sideloading from different sources, Obtanium (GitHub) (IzzyOnDroid) is useful to download apps, and keep them updated. You can even kinda use it as an F-Droid client.
Google is pretty lax on what it allows on Google play, so unless you’re trying to avoid using Google services or you want to install apps that aren’t on the play store, you don’t need to do it.
If you want adbocking and extra features in some apps (especially YouTube), check out ReVanced.
Google isn’t lying - there are risks to sideloading if you don’t know what you’re doing. Make sure what you’re downloading is coming from legitimate sources you trust. For example, if you look up ReVanced, some unofficial websites show up which may have malware. Triple check everything is coming from an official source.

- Comment on How do I find communities on Lemmy? 1 year ago:
Lemmy’s subscriber user count is usually wrong.
You only see the true number if the community is on your instance
Check the community from the original instance to see the actual number of subscribers
If you’re searching for instances, you should use lemmyverse.net/communities since it lets you quickly compare subscribers, shows you more results and also is just better overall

For a while now, the app has been really easy to sign up on, and now the website is the same.

The process got easier in mastodon 4.2.0, now you just have to type in your instance and it takes you to it directly.

That’s a great idea! I didn’t know about shields.io. Just added it to !celeste@lemmy.ca
I changed the link a little from the one you posted. Mine is:
[![Subscriber Count](https://img.shields.io/lemmy/celeste%40lemmy.ca?logo=lemmy&label=Subscribers)](https://lemmy.ca/c/celeste)
- I added alt text (so if the image doesn’t load, or people are using screen readers, they can still understand what it is),
- changed ‘Total Subscribers’ to just ‘Subscribers’,
- and made the badge a link to the community in the original instance, so anyone wondering why the numbers don’t match up can click the badge to see where the number’s coming from.
- Comment on How can i know whether a website is a part of the fediverse? 1 year ago:
Easiest way to know for sure is probably to search for it on fedidb.org. Instances don’t need to tell you they’re on the fediverse, but most of them have a link to the source code which will probably mention activitypub somewhere.
- Comment on Any chance to have a separated "PORN" tag to avoid blocking all kind of NSFW posts? 1 year ago:
I think copying Mastodon would be the best for this. You can mark the post as sensitive (nsfw), which blurs the images. You can also add a content warning that can be used for anything (nsfw, nsfl, spoilers, etc).
And then use tags separately for categorizing posts.

- Comment on [Guide] Open any Lemmy link in your Android app of choice 1 year ago:
reposting this comment because I accidentally clicked post before finishing
Open the Lemmy Redirect app, open the ‘Set Up Link Handling’ dropdown, then click ‘Settings’.
Lemmy Redirect ‘Open by default’ section in App Info
You should see this screen. (You can also find it from App Info)
Then click ‘Add link’ and you should see this screen.
Supported links section showing that there are 1504 supported links
You can manually select all 1504 of them if you want to, but I don’t think anyone wants to do that
