As mentioned by others, the Sahara used to be a lot greener during the African humid period, between 14,600 and 5,000 years ago.
The AHP led to the widespread settlement of the Sahara and the Arabian Desert and had a profound effect on African cultures, including the birth of the Ancient Egyptian civilization.

I’ve had modern steel spearhead bend during a re-enactment fight because I hit a plate really hard. I just bent it back in shape and continued. So I guess it doesn’t necessarily mean they had bad swords.
