- Comment on Your TV set has become a digital billboard. And it’s only getting worse. 2 months ago:
We had a samsung 4k curved tv that has ads on the input menu, and the ad space is filled with a samsung ad if the set has never connected to the internet.
It also harasses you with a pop up about connecting occasionally on startup.
It’s bearable but absurd. We returned it on principle
- Comment on Apple keeps flogging 8GB of RAM for its Mac computers but it's still a dead horse 6 months ago:
Yeah, audio and video workloads really need the ram. The base model is fine for content consumption though.
- Comment on Apple argues in favor of selling Macs with only 8GB of RAM 6 months ago:
The problem is the electrical resistance of the socket. Most of the performance on apple silicon is achieved through extremely high bandwidth, low latency memory. Unfortunately that necessitates a socketless design at the moment, and you can see that happening on the snapdragon X too.
- Comment on The next Cortana: Copilot on Windows is no reason to buy a new PC 7 months ago:
Usually there is a massive VRAM requirement. local neural networking silicon doesn’t solve that, but using a more lightweight and limited model could.
Basically don’t expect even gpt3, but SOMETHING could be run locally.

Yes, I have one and remember doing just that.

Dude. You are arguing with people who are explicitly NOT tankies. Nobody is claiming communism is a solution, just saying that going for the anti-intellectual guy with no implementable policies is not going to help. He is a rent seeker that is good at riling up crowds.
He is a populist.
- Comment on apple users in a nutshell 11 months ago:
Pretty much this for me too. Switched to iphone because I no longer wanted to tinker, switched my work laptop to apple silicon because the battery life and performance is stellar.
Learned to be fine with mac os, do most things in terminal anyway. Will likely switch to asahi linux when it is stable enough that I don’t have to tinker, because tinkering gets in the way of actually getting things done in my situation.
Also, being real: running LLMs on my mac is great. 128gb of unified memory basically means 120gb of vram. It’s absurdly expensive, but nothing quite like it exists in the market right now.

What? We call in a whole pizza order all the time. You can do that.

Admittedly I am in a weird situation where consoles and steam deck are both off the table. I am a bit of a framerate junkie. 30fps is unplayable.
Amusingly my m1 max macbook can actually hold 120fps in final fantasy xiv and actually has a 120hz screen, but those specs for the price would make no sense if this wasn’t also my main productivity system. The battery life, heat, speakers and screen quality are all huge bonuses in this case.
A steam deck would never satisfy me, so a gaming laptop would have been mandatory for travel if not for my macbook.
- Comment on Top Apple analyst says MacBook demand has fallen 'significantly' 1 year ago:
The bigger point here is that if you need that kind of power, it comes with compromises to battery life, heat, and device longevity.
Apple silicon is just fast enough for most workloads you want on a laptop, and can handle surprisingly heavy video workloads. For anything more, a desktop is a better idea than a laptop anyways.
There’s definitely a niche for desktop replacement class laptops, but that is a niche. Gaming laptops are still king though. You don’t buy a macbook for gaming.
- Comment on Top Apple analyst says MacBook demand has fallen 'significantly' 1 year ago:
At max usage, an m1 has a hard time overheating. The hardware is really good this time, and the previous overheating was due to insufficient cooling hardware.
Even if apple adds features that run the cpu/gpu/neural cores as hard as possible, overheating is not really on the table the same way it was on x86 macbooks.

Fair! These folks do not actually believe in any of the leftist policies they claim to like, however.
If you claim the PRC is anything but an authoritarian capitalist hellscape, you have nothing of value to contribute. The world is filled with authoritarians who use the popularity of leftist policies to get into power, then put those people in camps.

This tracks with what I found when looking into defederation. Calling them leftists is kinda falling for their deception.
They are authoritarians and use the cloak of leftism to defend authoritarian governments. They do not argue honestly and they brigade, coordinating on hexbear in plain sight. I defederated my two instances a while back for these reasons.
