- Comment on Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule? 7 months ago:
@gamedeviancy I decided to change the way how I save my notes. More specifically: Markdown
I got accustomed to it on spezzit FWIW, even without knowing about it in the first place, but then it felt so natural. I even use it here on Friendica, despite it being mostly relied on BBCode.
Now, how do I enjoy it? There are certain apps that save your notes as Markdown files in any folder of your choosing. You can then sync that folder through a cloud storage provider or through Syncthing so you can have your notes available on any device. And that's it. If I do not like an app (even on one device) I switch to another. My notes stay with me an I can read them even in a normal text editor.
I did not encrypt my notes, but since these are just regular files, I assume you can use something like VeraCrypt to add the folder containing the notes in there and move them that way.

@barney not yet, I know. I was referring to the situation after Meta makes them visible.

@atomicpoet well, it's an interesting way of getting people aware of us 😁
I wonder how will external posts display on Threads. For example, on Friendica there's generally an icon next to the post/comment which is the logo of the network people are posting from (e.g. Mastodon etc.). If they would do something similar on Threads it would be quite interesting.
- Comment on 7 months ago:
@atomicpoet it's looking good here in Friendica, as others pointed out (minus @zuck's profile pic, but that's a different story).
I get it however, Threads should do better testing in the Fediverse (or maybe there is a problem with your frontend? Idk)
- Comment on 7 months ago:
@YakyuNightOwl well, diaspora still exists.
- Comment on 7 months ago:@atomicpoet it's basically old social media habits in new clothes. That's one thing Threads cannot steal from Mastodon/the non-Meta Fediverse.
- Comment on 7 months ago:
@atomicpoet Threads only allows the Fediverse integration for public accounts. Why would someone get their content all in the public for something they don't know about?
Many people I know keep their profiles private on both Instagram and Threads, for obvious reasons (posting about their private life and whatnot). Switching to a public profile is a pretty high barrier of entry to the Fediverse for these people.
- Comment on 7 months ago:@scott well, my profile is kinda private as well. Nothing is available to anyone that is not logged in the server that I'm on at all. And I can also set the privacy to anything before I post so only the people I want can see it. That's what I like about Friendica.

@jupiter_rowland well, Meta already said is working "super hard" on changing it.
So we can expect to be able to spam Threads users wth anything this year or the next. At least those of them that agree to set their profile as public, as it is currently required.
- Comment on 7 months ago:
@atomicpoet he's probably referring to a whitelist kind of situation where you can only keep following a few accounts, while blocking the rest of Threads.
- Comment on 7 months ago:Another small addendum: I noticed Meta federated just in time for Follow Friday. No, I'm not gonna add the tag in this place :)
- Comment on 7 months ago:
A small addendum to what I previously wrote: You can already see this in practice.
I was just scrolling through the list, which is now populated by other Threads accounts as well, and I found this account, that I won't tag here (for people on Mastodon, see pic 1). It already tops place 134 as the most followed account in the Fediverse, as of writing. This person publicly claims that is an Amazon Associate and that is posting affiliate links from which is earning money from qualifying purchases - and as expected, the profile is full of these links (see picture 2 if on Mastodon).
Now, one might say, "but what's wrong with this? People might be interested in getting deals on stuff they want" - and this is true, I do not think what this person posts is simply useless or toxic to everyone. But the fact that it's so high up in the top of the most followed Fediverse profiles gets me worried. Many people do see stuff like this as spam, and would rather not see that in their feed.
And if that person is also paying to get higher up in the feeds of Threads users, specially those that are not following the guy, that is spam, and it's not the appropriate behavior.
This is just illustrative of the state of Threads, another #Meta product, next to #Facebook and #Instagram, and why any self-hostable, open source Fediverse platform is still a better choice to the Fediverse overall, than it. It is also concerning if more such profiles are topping the most followed Fediverse profiles and destroying its quality overall.
Hope that won't be the case.

- Comment on EU Watchdog Urged To Reject Meta 'Pay For Privacy' Scheme 8 months ago:
@tesseract from a market perspective, it's an okay trade to pay for having privacy, as you still use their services. I also donated this month to my instance because those servers don't get their uptime from the Holly Spirit. But this should come with an audit to check if they are really respecting the user privacy of the paying customers. Or better, some regulatory to figure out if the market price for privacy is justified or is it too big, compared to the amount of data created in a given period of time by the user and sold to the advertisers.
Not to mention, they should overhaul their data collection practices so that you only have your data collected while using the service. That means getting away with practices such as shadow profiles or pixel tracking.
Or they should just use other methods to make money with their service altogether.

- Comment on 9 months ago:
@hazelnot you give consent when you publicly post something online. In fact, guess what, I can see your profile and whatever you publicly post without even logging in to your instance. How? I use a web browser.
Did you also give your consent to an obscure 3rd party app to display your content inside it? No. Let's just ban them all then, just like Xitter and Reddshit did, or like Meta/Faceshit did in the 1st place.
Oh, it's so great when we have stuff to help us reach content, from friends, from people we follow, but God forbid someone else reaches our content from other parts of the internet. Those that want that are just techbros.
- Comment on 9 months ago:@hazelnot I don't get why people get angry over a freakin' bridge, yet they have no issue with the existence of projects like #BirdsiteLIVE. This is just so entitled. If you don't want to have your content available live on every place, just post it with a different privacy option smh

- Comment on Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts? 11 months ago:@ReversalHatchery I was thinking about that. I previously worked for a company that did the exact same thing, if I recall correctly (this was years ago, so I'm not sure whether they still do it). But I wanted to see if anyone has any more knowledge about this thing than me. If that's what happens, I guess I'll be fine simply keeping these contacts on Google and saving anything on GeneralSync going forward.
- Comment on Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts? 11 months ago:@sbv Thank you!
- Comment on Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts? 11 months ago:@lemann Thank you! Yea, many of my contact's emails are probably on Yahoo instead, so it's not that much of a biggie. I know nobody using Tuta or Proton or whatever. But hey, less data for Google is still less data for Google.

- Comment on Apps for helping track media collections? 11 months ago:
@ALostInquirer For books I use Calibre on my computer and I've recently started to use Bookwyrm in exchange to Goodreads (although pretty much all my friends use the latter).
For Music I use Discogs (for physical media) and maybe Bandcamp (for digitally owned media? idk, I just download them and use whatever music player I have on each device)
For movies I started using Letterboxd, recently migrated from IMDb, but it seems that not all movies are there yet, idk.
For photos, on my phone I use Google Photos without a Google account (I'm no longer syncing to them since they removed the unlimited backup feature). But Aves is also a great option which allows you to edit tags.
Never bothered about games tbh.

- Comment on Using email aliases (email alias services) with self-hosted email 11 months ago:@tesseract Yea, I was thinking about using aliases and alias providers as a middle-man to send&receive emails to&from providers that are known to be hard to tackle for people self-hosting their email. I understood from the article I linked that setting up an email server and maintaining it is a hassle itself, but I was wondering whether doing what I said above does make things easier for me or if it would be an extra burden.
