If someone isn’t motivated enough to actually think and create something, what makes you think they’ll be motivated enough to maintain that thing they didn’t create?
- Comment on Immich vs Ente ? 1 week ago:
Immich Downside: breaking changes are fairly common AFAIK
Uh… that’s news to me. I’ve been hosting 2 user’s photos for 1.5 years with absolutely zero breaking changes. I just updating from v2 to v3 and nothing broke.
I briefly checked out Ente, but personally I have zero trust for any project that requires users to sign a CLA to contribute like Ente: https://github.com/ente/ente/pull/11084#issuecomment-4762402896
Immich doesn’t do those shenanigans: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/7023#discussioncomment-8433346
CLAs are bad because the project can change the license whenever they feel like it. So Ente is effectively reserving the right to go full evil with their CLA.
Whereas Immich can’t suddenly decide they want to move away from AGPLv3.
- Comment on Is they're an easy way to make my Jellyfin accessible outside of my home network 1 week ago:
https://netbird.io/ for your own private network of trusted devices, it’s free and doesn’t require a separate Big Tech account to use (unlike Tailscale)
And then if you want to share Jellyfin with someone who isn’t in your Netbird network… believe it or not, also Netbird

LOL. Called it! 🤣
- Comment on Immich v3.0.0 is out, with Workflows preview 1 week ago:
Ooh, the workflows idea is interesting.
What I really want is for my photos to expire.
Most of the photos I take are junk photos: a picture of a receipt, a picture of a sprinkler model number, a picture of a random bug I saw while I was cleaning the pool. I just need these photos once and then I never need them again. I wish they would go away on their own.
Of course, there are also times when I do want to keep pictures, birthdays, vacations, etc.
I wish Immich (or someone) would create a camera with a switch that allows you to pre sort images into albums: permanent vs temporary
Of course, the Big Tech guys would never do this because they want you to store all of that junk on their clouds.
But, Immich could actually help trim junk.

I was just thinking about this the other day: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/tree/main/docker
Make sure to use the docker-compose.yml of the current release: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/releases/latest/download/docker-compose.yml
The compose file on main may not be compatible with the latest release.
I definitely have not been checking for updates on the compose files on any of my self hosted apps… I probably should…
- Comment on Anyone use Clevis + Tang to protect data on their home server? 2 weeks ago:
I’ll update this setup to use Shamir Secret Sharing more, where I’ll have three pins: my VPS (via Wireguard), a small computer somewhere else in my apartment, and a third at a neighbour (+ TPM on supporting computers).
Cool!

Curious what other calendar apps on Android folks use.

I don’t know enough about it to form an opinion about it.
If not then why share it?
Because I thought it was interesting.

- Comment on Security considerations about hosting Immich from home 4 weeks ago:
Definitely put it behind Netbird.
Also. I have a Jellyfin instance that I share with family, where I actually can’t put all of their client devices behind Netbird.
For that case, I used Netbird’s reverse proxy feature. So technically the Jellyfin instance is exposed to the public internet. HOWEVER, Netbird allows you to block or allow certain IP addresses. So while my Jellyfin instance is technically on the public internet, it’s only accessible from 1 specific public IP.
Otherwise, if you’re on the Netbird VPN, then the domain I have set resolves to the internal IP.

- Comment on What are your thoughts on pool management apps? 5 weeks ago:
For our pool I have a sand filter and a salt water chlorinator that basically handles everything for me though.
Wow. That sounds like a nice dream to me. I’m constantly adding chemicals to my pool. I think things are starting to settle into: need to dump a gallon of chlorine every 2 or 3 days.
- Comment on Email ownership, I give up. 5 weeks ago:
Yeah, hosting your own email server is pretty tough.
I think something like https://migadu.com/ might be more in the middle of hosting your own server and purely using someone else’s frontend.

Also it’s reasonable to think discussion forums are in some sense ephemeral
This is 100% wrong. This isn’t Discord or chat. People expect forums to appear in online search results, i.e. be persistent.
- Comment on What are your thoughts on pool management apps? 1 month ago:
Pool management sucks… I got my pool from green back to blue, but it’s been hard work. Tons of research, almost daily chores, tons of testing, TONS of money spent.
It’s definitely nice to use it when I can though.
But, still. It’s better to know someone who owns a pool, rather than owning the pool yourself.

I recently found out my wax ring for my toilet was leaking. I noticed because water started leaking out from the base of the toilet. When I lifted the toilet, I found the wax ring almost entirely intact. The entire ring was very black.
That’s why I made this post. Because I have leaky wax rings.
I bought this house 5 years ago. 🤷 IDK why things started failing now.
- Comment on Do I belong in tech anymore? - On quitting, the spread of AI, and the loss of an ideal. 2 months ago:
Exactly what I’m feeling… I don’t know of any companies that aren’t drinking the koolaid. My friend recently got laid off. He suspects it was because it was constantly pushing back on AI slop from other engineers.
I’ve been skipping the AI questions on recent company surveys… a few days ago, my manager directly asked me for “my thoughts on AI” during our 1:1… kinda freaked me out… I didn’t say anything bad about AI, but I also wasn’t gushing over how much I love AI (I hate AI)… I feel like they’re watching me a little more closely now… I’m going to start answering that I love AI on our surveys now… 😢
I don’t feel like they genuinely care about discovering if AI works. The AI questions are usually like: “Do you like AI?” and the answers are like “A: Yes”, “B: FUCK YES”, or “C: omg please more AI!”
