I got started on Dragonball, but I don’t know if it’s recommendable as someone’s first anime? On one hand, it’s so popular and so influential on so many anime that came after, it helped me familiarise myself with the tropes and stuff, but on the other hand, it’s too long and could be intimidating for new people. I guess Detective Conan and One Piece for the same reason. Something that says all it wants to say in about 30 episodes seems like a better first anime.

Assassination Classroom!. It starts off so goofy and cartoony, and as it goes on, it contextualises all of its silliness in the universe it’s built, and by the ending, well, it was the first time I had to leave a room full of friends to go cry my eyes out

That’s a tricky one for me. I’m tempted to give it to Parasyte, but I haven’t actually finished it yet, so idk

Thanks! I do remember a few visual cues associating the DNA double helix with spiral power, so that would make a lot of sense! As a Dragonball fan, I had to learn the hard way that you’ll always enjoy an anime more by focusing on the story and characters over obsessing about the power levels and maths!

Nice thanks! Yeah, the movies were more climactic, but had a lot less explanations than the original anime, and had some interesting changes in plot. Probably just because of the obviously shorter run time.

I kind of get it - Light was definitely getting more insane throughout the show, but even in episode one his first words were muttering about how humanity was lost and the world was rotten to the core. Everything that happened afterwards was simply because of Light getting the ability to act on those thoughts.

I remember being a teenager and getting tired of Pokemon’s formula, where every episode after a certain point became “new pokemon from the newest games shows up, Team Rocket justify it as rare or special somehow, try to capture it (and Pikachu) and get their arse handed to them, end”. That being said, as I get older and Pokemon becomes more of a nostalgic comfort show to me, I can’t help but soften on it over the years! It’s like the one constant in a world of chaos!

I’m also a big Dragonball fan, and ultimately every saga boils down to “new villain shows up, usually from space, about four or five of the Z fighters have a go at fighting them, they get trounced to build tension, and then Vegeta and Goku give it a go, and eventually Goku wins”.

But I really love it! It’s a formula that so many shows since have tried to replicate, but they never had the diversity of inspirations and the playful nature of Akira Toriyama to give it the same appeal!

I’ve recently started re-watching Gurren Lagann for the first time in like a decade! It still holds up fantastically well!

My favourite anime of all time! I wish it had a cinematic release, but I’m just glad to see the anime catch up on this bits of manga it missed!
