Why impose your preferences on that other person?
The return-to-office folks are not giving us the option of returning to work if we want. They’re forcing us even when it’s completely unnecessary. So yeah, you should have the option to bike to work when and if you want but the rest of us should have the option to opt out when it’s possible to work from home. That’s 100% not happening.

I know “America Bad” is popular on the Internet but it’s not always true. The ADA was among the first laws worldwide to treat disability rights as full civil rights across nearly all areas of public life, including employment, private businesses, public spaces, and transportation, and it went on to inspire other countries to pass similar sweeping laws. Also worth noting it was signed into law by a Republican weirdly enough. Not sure that would happen today.
If you want to say that the broader social safety net including healthcare in America sucks though, and by extension harms disabled people, I can’t really argue with that. But the ADA is excellent and groundbreaking.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is legitimately the best in the world and other first world countries wish they treated disabled people as well as America

When I was younger and TNG was coming out, I thought “oh wow this is so cool, every 20 years we go another 100 years into the future of Star Trek!” And here we are almost 40 years later, still rehashing the same characters from the same eras over and over. The only breath of fresh air is the last bit of Discovery and Starfleet Academy. Give me a flagship show set in the 26th century or a show about the Temporal Cold War. Something new!

I had video out via MHL back in like 2013 and a usable desktop environment on an HTC M7 or something like that. Haven’t had a phone that could do anything similar since, and it’s kind of wild with how much more powerful phones are these days that desktop modes aren’t more common. I would love to not have to carry a laptop around when my phone is more than powerful enough for what I do for work.

Has no one ever been in a forest before? Trees 100% grow all up into each other all the time. They compete for sunlight and try to choke each other out by design. These pictures honestly don’t look real

- Comment on The RAM shortage is coming for everything you care about 1 month ago:
I’d just point out that now might be a good time to add a whole-house surge arrester and/or get a bunch of new surge arresting power strips for your hardware. They have a useful life measured in joules dissipated so replace them if they’re old too or your cheap RAM (among other things) may let out the magic smoke one day.

Engineer here, but my technical expertise is about as far away from computing and technology as you can get and still be an engineer.
I was a kid in the 90s and the first album I bought was Metallica’s black album. I spent over $18 in like 1999 so with inflation that’s like $300 or something now. Then the drummer of what was then my favorite band says hey, if you’re downloading our music on Napster, then we don’t want you as a fan. That hit teenage me pretty hard and basically radicalized me to find “alternative methods” for every piece of digital media I could, if that’s how the people I looked up to were going to treat me for not having as much money as them. Everything I host now started at that inflection point, from picking up Linux as a hobby to learning about networking and security. Turned out to be a pretty good path to follow though seeing how Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify et. al. turned out in the end.
I still download and share all of Metallica’s discography out of spite, but haven’t listened to them since.

I had a corporate job where I never interacted with customers and I was salaried and my boss would still keep Teams up on his computer all the time and come and check in on my cubicle if I wasn’t showing available on Teams exactly at 7:30 in the morning. I got lectured once for showing up at 7:35. Not late to any meetings, not late on “deliverables”, etc. Just not “professional” enough for him. I have no doubt believing this post.
