“Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” Professor Faber

- Comment on What's the deal with people liking old devices? 1 week ago:
I’m a millennial in my 40s who is starting to get back into old tech from my late teens to early 20s. So far I have a Nintendo 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, old cheap phone turned dedicated MP3 player/mobile video device, and a boombox that does CDs, aux, AMFM radio, and has Bluetooth capabilities. The boombox is newer, but still plays CDs. I like having dedicated devices that don’t do everything.
The old cheap phone is nice because I can load it with music or movies and it saves battery life when I stream on my phone. The DSs are because that is my favorite handheld system and there are a ton of games that you can get for cheap or free. The boombox is because I dragged out all of my old CDs, found a lot of good cheap ones at thrift stores.
I’m just tired of paying for all the streaming services and owning nothing. So I’m going backwards in time with my tech.

Last copy I saw went on eBay for $85, I’ve never noticed it lower than $150 before that. My library has it in ebook and audiobook, but I would like a copy of my own. I downloaded one and I still want to support the author so I have no issue with buying it on sale. I will probably buy it and print it out at my library at some point because I do just prefer to read a physical copy of something.
Thanks for the tips and link!

I prefer physical books myself, but I’m always ok to read an ebook if that’s how I can get a story. Do you have a preferred place to get them? There are a few that I would love to own, but a used copy is significantly too expensive.
I’m looking at you A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson at over 100 bucks

I’ve been picking up old ST novels at thrift stores for $1-2. I only have a handful, but the ones I’ve read are pretty good. It’s like reading an extended episode of ST.
- Comment on So say, someone lives in an English speaking country and wanna see a movie in the threaters but they struggle to understand English, how are they supposed to watch it? 1 week ago:
If you’re in Philly, there may be something in the Chinatown area, or maybe someone there can give you options so your mom can enjoy a movie out with you. I hope you find a solution.
That said, you should go see Project Hail Mary, it’s fantastic. Maybe take a friend if you don’t want to go alone, but I’ve gone to movies by myself plenty of times and I would have gone alone to this one if I hadn’t dragged my partner to opening weekend.

And make sure you don’t just sit there. Get up and walk around because it gets the blood flowing and THC where it needs to go. Doesn’t have to be outside, just stand up and move a bit.

As someone else mentioned, it’s the lack of fiber in so many US folks diets. When we finally get more fiber than they are used to, they tend to poo a lot. The food itself is fine for fast food.
I used to eat at Taco Bell on a near daily basis because it was my favorite fast food, cheap, and in the mall I worked in. I have never once had bowel discomfort from the food there. Even now, I ate it a few weeks ago, no problems at all.

Conduit is probably the best option, I just haven’t done anything with it yet. And I might have to convince partner to cut some holes in the wall to make that work. I’ll eventually figure it out.

Oh the orange ones are the most fun. I had a couple oranges as a kid and they were so sweet and so dumb. I loved them lol

Not all of these are social media sites, but this list is my social internet path
Bolt dot com & SciFi channel chatrooms
AIM & Yahoo chatrooms
ICQ & IRC
Soulseek (I count it because I used to hang in the chatrooms quite a bit)
Eyeball chat, then followed friends to Camfrog chat, before both were enshittified
MySpace
Facebook
Reddit
Mastadon
Threads
BlueSky
Lemmy then Piefed

Yep, I met my partner through OKC just before they enshittified. I also had used it to meet folks when I travelled for work. I had a note on my profile that I travelled a lot and just wanted to see new cities and eat good food. Surprisingly, I had far more platonic meetups than creepy guys trying to hook up, which I stated I wasn’t looking for in my profile.
I was a very very early adopter of OKC. I remember when it was more of a social media website with quizzes and badges than just dating. I’m still friends with a few people I met there in the early days.

I’ve been intentionally avoiding spoilers and previews, so I had no idea it was coming. It was a really happy surprise for me and that episode was so great.
I absolutely adore Sam’s smile, just beautiful!

That episode is my favorite one so far. It was such a great homage to DS9 and I loved seeing adult Jake.
I also super love that they are bringing back the skirt uniform. Jay-Den rocked that outfit! 💚

For work use I’m #13, except I remove the keyboard, put the laptop in front to use that keyboard, then center the monitors behind it.
For personal use, I’m #3

I frequently window shop local thrift stores, so I have a lot of bunny decor and little statues gifted by friends. I lost count around 35.
I don’t have a picture of them with the greens, but here are my two spoiled dorks.

You’re the pineapple blossom post! That’s such a nice picture.
I’ve been intentionally trying to be less of a lurker and more active in comments. !books@lemmy.world is one place that I’ve tried to be more active because I love reading, thinking, and talking about books. I was also posting updates about a green lynx spider on my lemmy.world account before I switched to piefed, this is a good reminder for me to post an update on my girl (RIP) and her beautiful little babies.
Lots of us lurkers need to be more active, myself included.
