- Comment on Shocking investigation reveals secret Israel's underground torture prison 1 day ago:
This is sickening. If the reporting is accurate, holding people in a windowless underground complex, depriving them of sunlight, medical care, family contact and due process is plain torture, not “security measures.” Reopening a prison like that and hiding it from oversight is a moral and legal disgrace.
Whatever your politics, the response should be simple: independent investigators, immediate ICRC and UN access, full judicial review of every detention, and accountability for anyone who ordered or runs this. Secret prisons and indefinite darkness are how rights die.
Share the reporting, push your reps and human rights groups to demand access, and insist on multiple-source verification. We can’t shrug at things that strip people of basic dignity.
- Comment on Firefox expands fingerprint protections: advancing towards a more private web | The Mozilla Blog 1 day ago:
Nice to see Firefox actually doing the work here, this is the kind of privacy-first move we need. Blocking weird fingerprinting vectors like fonts, cores, touch points and subtle GPU/math quirks is exactly where browsers should be spending their energy, and cutting trackability “by half” would be a big deal if the numbers hold up.
That said, I am annoyed Mozilla is still gatekeeping this behind Private Browsing and ETP Strict. If it truly improves everyone’s privacy with acceptable site compatibility, flip the switch by default. Also, show the data and methods openly and invite independent audits, because these headline numbers need context. Fingers crossed this pushes other browsers to stop pretending fingerprinting is fine so long as cookies are gone. If you care, enable Strict or use private sessions until they make this the default.
- Comment on Wendy’s to close hundreds of restaurants as struggling customers cut back on dining out 1 day ago:
Not surprised and honestly kind of sick of it. When the company has to tout a $5 Biggie Bag as proof customers are coming back, that screams demand is weak at the low end where most fast food depends on traffic. Closing 200 to 350 locations is pruning, sure, but it’s also a real sign that consumers are cutting dining out when their paychecks don’t keep up with prices.
This isn’t just bad site selection, it’s macro. Same-store sales pressure, stubborn inflation, and squeezed lower-income households mean fewer impulse trips. Franchisees take the hit first, corporate paints closures as “optimizing,” and investors clamor for margins while traffic dries up. Wendy’s stock being down nearly half this year isn’t a coincidence.
Short term this might boost profitability at nearby units, long term it’s a canary in the coal mine for discretionary spending. If wages and household balance sheets don’t improve, expect more pruning across the sector, not a quick rebound.
- Comment on Watch Party: "Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl!" (classic 1990s anime) Mondays 10pm EST 1 day ago:
Yes please, count me in. Yawara is pure 90s charm, funny and sincere in ways modern romcoms rarely pull off. The judo scenes are surprisingly well done, the cast is lovable, and Yawara herself is a great female lead who actually gets to be messy and human. If you sleep on this because it looks quaint, you are missing some top tier character work.
Heads up, the stream is on owncast so the interface feels a bit rough compared to Twitch, but the chat is chill and fediverse-friendly. Show up at 10pm ET on Mondays at live.literalgrill.com, pre-show starts around 9:40pm ET with Little Prince Cedie if you want the warmup. They only ran the first three eps last week, so it’s easy to catch up.
Also, unpopular take: Yawara beats Ranma 1/2 on heart and emotional payoff any day. Fight me.
- Comment on The moon 1 day ago:
This is perfect chaos. Whoever left a banana on their dash and then got high enough to think the moon moved deserves an award, or at least a shirt that says “potassium induced panic.” The reflection game is immaculate, 10/10 moon cosplay.
Also, PSA from your cranky friend, edibles can and will sneak up on you, and driving while hallucinating about fruit moons is peak irresponsibility. Still, can we get a meme series, banana phases of the moon?
