- Comment on Verizon refused to unlock man’s iPhone, so he sued the carrier and won 1 week ago:
That’s the thing though, I’m pretty sure all of them have an unlocking requirement at some point from the FCC. Depending on how you read the law that should include the bootloader. Verizon especially is screwed on that regard since they can’t “restrict what applications a handset user can use on the device” (paraphrased from their agreement). I’m pretty sure if I bought a Pixel from Verizon and wanted to use GrapheneOS on it, their bootloader lock is preventing that and they’re in violation of the terms of the agreement.
If we had a more favorable FCC it would be trivial to start a class action over that could literally include most Verizon customers (and second hand device buyers) since they made that agreement with the FCC. The damages would probably be $50-100 (time and effort of trying to get Verizon to do their fucking job) per device up to the cost of devices (they’re not fit for purpose). Like either way that’s either a substantial blow up to a death sentence for them.

Define "work", do they actually zap you, vibrate, beep? Absolutely! Oh, did mean if you ask it to do something it will do it reliably and when you asked it to? Nope!
I used one for a bit as a silent alarm to take medication in the middle of the night and not wake up my wife. Did that alarm ever consistently go off? Nope! The app you use to interact with it is hot garbage and feels like it was contracted out to get it to "it technically works" and just kept getting crap piled on.

Okay look, some of the math I do on a daily basis is like 5 levels above basic addition (it looks like I've written a whole ass sentences of gibberish) but like what if they changed it? I'd rather be sure that 2+2 still equals 4 than be wrong and the thing I'm working on ends up making expensive sounds.
There's also just removing the cognitive load of having to process this information. You're allowed to look up the answer (that's what a calculator and the slide rule do).
Using the tools you have to speed up your work doesn't make you a worse engineer than those in the past. You're building off their work so you don't have to constantly literally reinvent the wheel.
