Think of a gaming PC from the 90s. And now imagine asking the same then.
- Comment on If a Space Elevator became a reality, wouldn't the cable act as a kind of wick for all of the unfiltered radiation from outside our atmosphere? 1 week ago:
There’s no need for that speed. Ships won’t have to be build on the ground. The ideal is having an space dock at the geosync part and only move up and down the payload, not the ships.
- Comment on If a Space Elevator became a reality, wouldn't the cable act as a kind of wick for all of the unfiltered radiation from outside our atmosphere? 1 week ago:
The way a normal elevator works is one way to lessen the problem: the port on the top is used to launch cargo AND to receive it, so when you make the outgoing cargo rise you use the incoming cargo as the balance. 1 ton goes up, 1 ton goes down.

And not all would fall. Part of it would be launched outwards by inertia.
- Comment on How long would it take a black Hole to fully absorb a person from event horizon to center of the earth style? 1 week ago:
The extreme case is a photon crossing the universe. For an outside observer, it will take the photon billions of years to cross the universe. For the photon there is no time at all.

Maybe from the POV of the person falling.

Neglected or were coerced to not cover? Every time Europe has wanted to be on par with the US, the US had undermined the idea. Being the guy with the bigger stick has always been the ideal for the US. And that includes a less powerful Europe.

1 branch = old system.
The 3 branches are there to counterbalance the powers… theoretically.
And China is something different.
- Comment on The Votely Political Quiz - Most Accurate 3D Political Compass 2 weeks ago:
Every democracy has 3 branches (AKA powers): judiciary, legislative and executive.

- Comment on If the protests in Iran win/topple the government what will it look like immediately afterwards? Also what would be the good or bad about installing a monarchy again? 2 weeks ago:
Just a note: in Spain the first 10 years after Franco saw a lot of terrorism, from ETA, BVA, King Christ’s Warriors, GRAPO, Terra Lliure, EPG, AAA, GAL, … and the last ETA bombing was in this century.

So the same but without the sharia, right?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m talking about not treating then as special but just as anyone else and reply as you would with anyone else, not as if they are superior.
- Comment on Ubisoft Closes Canadian Studio After It Unionizes 3 weeks ago:
That’s a mistake. If you treat them as your equal then you can make then see they aren’t special or “middle class” and then you have another pair of hands to help the working class.
- Comment on 3.5" floppy disks were peak tactile feedback in storage: easy to stick in, drives had a button to immediately eject them, big enough to get labels, thin enough that stacks didn't take too much space 3 weeks ago:
But it could be copied on a 720 KiB floppy with space left after writing.

There is no middle class. Either you have to work to pay your bills and you are a worker or people works for you to pay your bills and you are an owner.

- Comment on Maybe the RAM shortage will make software less bloated? 4 weeks ago:
I don’t disagree with that. But the problem is having one electron backend for each web app and not one backend for all web apps.
- Comment on Maybe the RAM shortage will make software less bloated? 4 weeks ago:
I remember in the 80s a PC programmer that did his programs in GWBASIC and when I asked him why was he using that instead of a better language that could make faster a smaller programs his answer was “if this doesn’t run fast enough in the client’s PC then the client will buy a better PC”. That’s the mindset, “it’s not my problem once I sell it”.
- Comment on Maybe the RAM shortage will make software less bloated? 4 weeks ago:
If those web apps were using the same shared electron backend then they could be “a godsend”. But each of those web apps uses it’s own electron backend.

In a societal collapse your best investment is between your ears. If you can build/grow/… things you don’t need to worry about losing value.
