- Comment on WhatsApp [Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo] 1 day ago:
this is an iteration of the (mostly post-ironic) meme “what if X franchise had whatsapp?”, depicting a character’s inbox of direct messages. spoilers for a series based on a book from 1844 below:
spoiler
- Throughout the series, Edmond Dantes (the titular Count) manipulates a variety of people to achieve his vengeance against a bunch of nobles, primarily Fernand Mondego, for falsely putting him for 20 years in the space torture prison Chateau d’lf, mostly due to Fernand wanting to marry Mercedes, a woman who Edmond was in love with. - Contact #1 is Haydee Tebelin, a musician who was once princess of a region of Eastern Space before having her parents killed and then being sold into slavery by Fernand. She has now been pseudo-adopted by the Count to take down Fernand. - Contacts #2 and #3 are Mercedes and her son, who has quite a few scenes of homoerotic subtext with the Count. According to TVTropes, in an interview, Albert and Count’s scenes together were described as almost romantic, but I don’t have the energy to track that down at the moment and am not sure which search terms I would use. The line is a commonality across different variations of the meme. (Sidenote: Albert is 14-15 and definitionally being groomed by Edmond by being manipulated in order to fulfill his vengeance. I’m not endorsing any romantic connection between them, simply pointing out the subtext in the show suggesting it.) - Contact #4 is Franz d’Epinay, who repeatedly shows interest in Albert throughout the series. - Contacts #5 and #6 are Eugenie de Danglars and Andrea Cavalcanti, children of other nobles that have wronged Edmond. Eugenie is engaged to Albert, but Andrea despises this. He’s generally a terrible person, and at one point even attempts to rape Eugenie. In Episode 20, after she leaves for a foreign country, he settles for an… Oedipal option instead. - Contact #7 is Peppo, a side character who appears throughout the series, and ends its first episode by luring Albert into a dark alleyway for sex before pulling a gun on him and performing a kidnapping. - Contact #8 is the titular Gankutsuou, a kind of eldritch daemon that awakened within Edmond’s mind during his imprisonment in Chateau d’lf.

God, that was such a weird controversy. I don’t like oversimplified Silicon Valley culture-esque logos, but this was blown out of proportion (and surprisingly partisan, for some reason?)
- Comment on even Crunchy roll is tired 1 week ago:
I haven’t watched or read it, and don’t plan to, but this is the gist of other people’s criticisms:
- The main character, Kazuya Kinoshita, is an unlikeable asshole who the series tries to paint as relatable, but which only a menace to society could relate to.
- The series’ author is obsessed with Kazuya’s love interest Chizuru to a degree that many consider weird (especially since the author is married). Many believe this ties into:
- The series’ current length is around 380 chapters, which is comparable to Berserk, the original Dragon Ball, The Prince of Tennis, and a few volumes short of the infamous long-runner Glass Mask. The series’ most recent plot development is, after 40 or so volumes, Chizuru has understandably rejected Kazuya. This is not technically the end of the series, but I do feel like continuing after this is a very unsafe form of masochism.
- The only way the author can think of to have the love interests fall for his protagonist is to have him literally save their lives. Speaking of that:
- Rika, a character in Kazuya’s pseudo-harem, has a condition that slows down her heart, and so searches for love in Kazuya to make her heart beat faster. Several people with this condition have equated the actual sensation described by the sudden boost to be more akin to feeling like you’re dying.
- As you can expect from point 3, the pacing is generally agreed to be awful.
- In the series, Kazuya is turned on by imagining Chizuru with other men, to the point where Chapter 218, where he has an erection in a pool over it, has risen to legendary memetic status. Now, I’m pretty sex-positive, so I don’t care that this plot point exists; however, from what I’ve seen, it seems that not even actual cuckoldry fetishists like the writing of these scenes. People also tend to draw connections between this and point 2, insinuating that the series is accidentally a work of metafiction in which the author is more important than the main character.

I get that.
- Comment on YSK the basic techniques for "deprogramming" people who you think are in a cult 2 weeks ago:
This is nice. I would recommend not using the term deprogramming, though, as it’s very associated with Ted Patrick and the Cult Awareness Network’s horrific abuse under the guise of deprogramming. Seriously, the CAN actually got better after being purchased by Scientology. That’s the level they operated on.

The replier is right but I would be lying if I said that mask connected to the cannulas doesn’t look extremely cool.

In volume 17 (i think?) of Berserk, the character Farnese is nearly raped by a wild horse.
…And now you see why this manga is impossible to recommend to people.

I haven’t read any of these yet, so take with salt, but:
Killer Bambi/Matsumoto Inaki: Sway, Cruel, Toxic, Lightning, Heartache (apparently this one’s Omegaverse), Living In Sin, Undercover, Sacrifice
Souya Himawari: Original Sin
- Comment on Albert is physically incapable of taking a hint [Gankutsuou] 5 weeks ago:
For people who haven’t watched it: This is barely an exaggeration. At one point he says “it is so tragic to not be able to marry the one you love” in context to the characters of Maximillien and Eugenie, and he does this WHILE LOOKING DIRECTLY AT ALBERT.
