This. Everybody wanted it to be AGI right out of the gate. It’s just a tool, like Photoshop. It will get better over time but it’s not the end all be all.
- Comment on Roku launches Howdy, a $2.99 ad-free streaming service 3 days ago:
When I saw the ad for this on my Roku I thought it was just some western channel based on the name and color scheme. It wasn’t until I saw an article about it that I even knew what it was. I looked into it, my thoughts are, terrible branding, terrible marketing, terrible discovery on the website.
I don’t see anything that I don’t already own that I would want to watch, but since the website search sucks I don’t know if there’s more to see or not.
Based on all that, I’m not even willing to blow $2.99 one time to see if it gets better in the app because I doubt it will.

- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 1 week ago:
TIL. I first encountered Sceptre during lockdown when I needed better monitors than I was sent home with. I’ve been impressed and have bought two more since then for other devices. And about two years ago I bought one of their dumb TVs, and it’s worked flawlessly.

Nope, barbie girl by aqua. If you’re lucky enough to have never heard it don’t look it up, you’ll never un-hear it.
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 1 week ago:
TVs don’t seem to be a core business for them, I get the impression that they are a monitor focused business. Of course it’s not hard to upgrade a monitor to a TV so why not?
They do list all their products on their website so maybe check there?
- Comment on Should I unplug my smart tv from the internet? 1 week ago:
Yes.
Get a dumb TV, I’ve had great luck with the Specter brand, and hook up a set top box for your smart functionality.
Smart TVs spyon you, report on you, eat bandwidth even when off, and become out dated quickly.

They changed their business model from a mode of transport to a mode of vacation. The profits for major cruise lines are in the billions so really it’s more than surviving.
Industry adapts or changes, buggy makers become car companies, radio stations started also broadcasting TV signals, cable companies started offering Internet, and cruise lines started offering vacations rather than transportation.
As for airships, they were set back by The Hindenburg and USS Akron & Macon crashing. But they are starting to make a comeback, most are just focusing on cargo ships at the moment. It’ll take time since The Hindenburg is burned into everyone’s brain, but as people get used to seeing cargo blimps and larger cargo airships flying around and not crashing, they may just come to accept it and treat it like a mini cruise ship. Spend a few days flying over scenic spots and relaxing then disembark.

I was just pointing out that they still exist, basically they adapted and remained in business.
- Comment on Need a keyboard with a dedicated "slop" button 1 week ago:
As always, there’s an xkcd for that…lol
To quickly further expand on my previous example with a few I thought of afterwards,
- the wax cylinder will kill live music
- the radio will kill live music
- the TV will kill radio
- the airplane will kill the cruise lines

Seriously, I don’t get the issue but I understand the phenomenon. It’s like painters when the camera was invented,
“cameras will put us out of work, cameras are lower quality, anyone with a camera can just take a picture!”
Painters are still around, painted art is still desired and expensive. It will be the same over time with AI, we just have to wait for people to get over it.

This was my ex girlfriend, she had her a girlfriend when we met but they both understood that she was more attracted to men. We had a sit down early on and agreed that from time to time they would need some alone time, and that worked until they broke up over money.
The funny part was they were both bi, my girlfriend was more attracted to men, and her girlfriend was more attracted to women. So I saw both sides of it.
- Comment on Imagine if Amazon and all jobs out there were cooperatively owned? 1 week ago:
It’s called leveraged borrowing, it’s how the billionaire class pays for things. The banks typically give them super low rates and generous terms on these types of loans.
So what Elon did was took a loan against his assets, Tesla stock, at a low APR with very loose repayment terms, then paired that with money pledged by a few other minority investors and that’s how he was able to quickly come up with 44 billion to buy Twitter.
- Comment on No matter how hard he tries, Elon Musk will never be as cool or as respected as Martha Stewart. 1 week ago:
To paraphrase Al Franken, I like Martha Stewart more than others, and I hate Martha Stewart.
Also, fuck Elon.
- Comment on The EU still wants to scan all your chats – and the rules could come into force by October 2025 1 week ago:
Signal has already stated that they will pull out of the UK if they go through with their version of this, I imagine they’ll say the same for the EU.
Get a good VPN, exit it from a non-5 eyes country, and hope they don’t start blocking by phone number alone… and hopefully they’ll drop the phone number requirement sooner than later.
Also, welcome to Signal!
- Comment on SEC says it will deregulate cryptocurrencies with 'Project Crypto' 1 week ago:
Crypto (ETH and the like) is useful for it’s protocol, you can build projects on it.
Bitcoin is a good store of value, and with lightning payments starting to be accepted it could be a good way to pay for goods and services. The third world is currently using lightning to circumvent inflationary currency swings.

- Comment on Age verification and the enshitification of streaming will help reduce the decline in computer literacy in under 18s 2 weeks ago:
I disagree, Microsoft’s enshittification of windows with win 8 led me to learn Linux. From there I’ve learned more about computing, self hosting, and networking than I ever had an interest in before. What I’m saying is give it time, nobody is going to be hackerman on day one of this law being enforced.
