still not sure how to feel about the random fanservice-y shots…? they’re not really sexualized, except what Manatsu did with her phone…
they seemed like they were hinting that Manatsu would find some other Harugon to date. Kuroe-chan could introduce them and return the wingwoman favor :P
Writing-wise, it’s really interesting that (for now) the role of “truly loves you even if you look like a literal monster” goes to Manatsu, instead of the more-obvious Minami. Strangely enough, I think it actually makes it more believable, because outside of her fetish/kink she’s just a normal person. And even though she’s a good friend, she’s not romantically interested in Kuroe, so her love of Harugon is less motivated/biased than Minami might be. I’m fascinated to see how they reconcile this, and where they go from here!

depends on what you’re looking for :p
I think this is technically seinen, but the story is very shoujo-coded. It’s a sweet romcom with a very green-flag ML. The relationship progression is decent, the supporting cast is fleshed out, and there really isn’t any miscommunication drama / will-they-won’t-they – the catch is, there is a lot of that re: the FL’s whole kaiju thing (like classic ultraman).
The kaiju sequences are CGI, but they don’t really break my immersion. The camerawork/direction is pretty good. I’ve really liked the writing so far; they haven’t been afraid to tackle complex issues (most recently, makeup) while leaving space for nuance.

it broke my heart when Jeffery had to say Vicky didn’t tell him anything…
I think trusting Nonna to come back is a form of vulnerability, which is why Vicky is having such a hard time with it :c
Nonna herself has been more of a supporting character, not actually getting that much focus devoted to her, but she got a decent amount this episode. The screen time she does get is very efficient at characterizing her though, and she really steals the show.
I liked Baron Hanson’s little subplot more than I expected. They didn’t get redeemed–their actions were unquestionably selfish and entitled–but their actions were understandable, and it seems like they were able to begin to heal (especially if the items they sent were originally Dolores’s or intended for her).
it’s kinda fun (and way less frustrating) that the typical rom-com miscommunication plot device gets replaced with straight-up not communicating (due to the premise); and all the main characters are pretty competent besides

I like that we’re explicitly stating the goal that Mizuka’s character arc is and always was about, and also giving us a more concrete “roadmap” for the rest of the season
Ouka filling up the empty seat next to Mizuka is a cute (and symbolic) touch
The over-the-top effects / reaction to Svietlana & Shizuku’s performance feels kinda hamfisted–not that I don’t like sincere portrayals, but rather it felt like an attempt to paper over something that clearly should’ve been (and textually was) conveyed naturally. I wasn’t expecting breathtaking animation, but that sequence did pull me out of the moment a bit.
I love that there’s a 2x “being good doesn’t mean you’re good at teaching” thing going on here, both with Mizuka -> Sunflower Circus, and Lotus Circus -> Mizuka. … hold on, isn’t “technical virtuoso needs to learn basic soft skills” just Bocchi the Rock >.>
- Comment on [Episode] GROW UP SHOW -Sunflower Circus- • Grow Up Show: Himawari no Circus-dan - Episode 6 discussion 1 week ago:
if they’ve been making all their phone calls from phone booths, then it means it’s basically impossible for anyone else to contact them (their spot getting taken seems less silly now too)
and I guess the yellow brick road reference in the opening song was intentional! neat
I love how the show has been constructed narratively–we’ve explored the supporting cast, and now we’re coming back (at the halfway point) to deconstruct Mizuka. The writing questions our previous understanding that she was “the best”, and teases that “the Lotus Circus” will get expanded upon. I was kinda expecting it to just stay backstory, so that’s a pleasant surprise. c:
the comedic timing is still top-notch (beats to let things sink in, everyone talking at once, deadpan “in installments”, etc.)

I appreciate that this show is modeling good communication between partners; I’ll take as much of that as I can get
that, plus we get some character development for her mom this time; I wonder if this is going to set her up even more to oppose Kuroe’s dad (also, surely that phone call he made is going to factor back in to the plot at some point?)
This episode was strangely fanservice-y; it wasn’t gratuitous or anything but we did get multiple separate moments without more than incidental justification (+ Manatsu’s boob window at the very end??)… I guess it could just be a cute part of the romance, but it was odd enough to notice. (funny that this week’s episode of Love Unseen also had some, albeit extremely tame by anime standards)
does her transformation have a refractory period? … she seems to be able to handle a lot more emotion after she de-transforms

damn, I guess horseriding isn’t tomboy territory…
I dunno how justified it was supposed to seem, but taking a child from her mother because “she looks like my dead child” (even if plot-logic says this means there’s a good chance she’s the same person) is so fucking sick and heinous. It does fit with what we know about some Ashburian nobles… I really really hope they don’t reveal Nonna as actually being their daughter, because it would distract from that point (assuming Nonna is just going along to shut them up).
I know the episode is purportedly about “holding on” (to Nonna & in general), but most of the episode seemed to be about giving her reasons/ways to leave. I guess it makes sense that to set up Vicky making the choice to stay, it needs to be established that she has absolutely no reason to stay apart from her own free will. The contrast was pretty stark when she talked about wishing for her tranquil days to last forever, and then immediately establishing a means to escape on horseback. She’s going to have to pick one, even if she truly wants both :/

not lost on me that she was talking about the blush not working, only to immediately blush… I see what they did there
I love that we’re getting even more makeup discourse (and also touching on revenge porn??). It’s awesome that we’re getting payoff for Rairi’s backstory instead of that just being an exposition thing. Her moment feels so earned (even though it’s only been 2 episodes!) because we’ve been shown her “true self” since the moment she walked into that classroom, and I just 😭😭😭 it’s so great, I’m so proud of her
I love that it’s the people around her that really lifted her up, and I’m so glad she found people who weren’t shitbags and were willing to reciprocate what she was putting out
last thing: if you’re boating, please wear life jackets, people >.>>

the time-skipping fairy-tale vibes work so well for a story about planting crops and seasons passing; this series is the perfect vehicle for telling a story like this
I love that (unlike humans) they’re not planting food, but instead literally planting “happiness”/“community”. I would guess this is probably intentionally parallel to the overall story, and how Momma cat raised all her children, and now nekoryuu is doing the same
- Comment on [Episode] Victoria of Many Faces • Tefuda ga Oume no Victoria - Episode 5 discussion 2 weeks ago:
Fantasy languages in media generally sound kinda silly to me, but they do have the benefit of not making VAs attempt to pronounce a real world language… I guess the
bettermore believable of a conlang it is the more of a pass I give it (e.g. phonology/orthography rules, custom grammar, etc. instead of just word substitution)
It feels like Vicky is doing all this not just for her own conscience, but to tie up loose ends? She’s clearly preparing to leave now, and all the foreshadowing hints at some kind of conflict between Jeff (& the Ashburians) and her old organization. All I ask is that Nonna gets to play some kind of role in the climax, given that they’ve been gradually building her up in the background.
- Comment on [Discussion] What anime tend to make you cry? 2 weeks ago:
not the only thing, but one thing that reliably gets me to cry is someone making a sacrifice for someone else who doesn’t realize/comprehend what is happening, and lashing out at them (e.g. starving mother saves some extra food for her child, but the child is angry at her because it tastes bad)
- Comment on [Episode] GROW UP SHOW -Sunflower Circus- • Grow Up Show: Himawari no Circus-dan - Episode 5 discussion 2 weeks ago:
I liked the camerawork this episode. The two shots that really stood out to me were the tight shot on Akane’s mouth (when she was talking instead of listening), and the lingering out-of-focus shot when going after Akane (trying and failing to see into the trees).
I like that they’re talking about animal abuse (since circuses have a lot of history with that). The question I have is whether they have other animals? surely the elephant wasn’t their only act, if Mizuka says they were known for their animal acts?

I was not expecting such a nuanced take on makeup but I loved all of it. I love that this show manages to take a completely absurd premise and use it to deliver a monologue (verbatim) that describes such a real experience, and that’s just the first half of the episode. We end up exploring a discussion about confidence, self-determination, self-image, societal norms, and even take a detour into how self-deprecating humor can become harmful. And after all that, we have a coda with mom’s more toxic side–again, couched in her (genuine!) protectiveness and concern for Kuroe–contrasting her reaction with Minami’s. Just like last episode, this was the best episode so far.
The construction right outside the cosmetics shop is an obvious metaphor, but also used as a deft bit of worldbuilding, what with Kuroe constantly rampaging through the city now. I like it.
Minami-kun fascinates me as a character. He’s the stereotypical “perfect boyfriend”, always knowing exactly what to do and what to say, loyal and affectionate, all I can see is green flags. It would make him such a boring character, except the thing where he clearly should be noticing that his girlfriend regularly transforms into a kaiju!? Which makes him either very dumb (which is a little interesting…), or he does–must?–know Kuroe’s secret?? I think this tension is what really carries him as an interesting character.

accurate depiction of kids playing with cats
& more “just-so stories”, this time with cats randomly staring at a wall (or roof in this case)
speaking of walls, the reverend’s wall of weapons definitely looked more like a torture dungeon than he probably intends
the way we learn about the world through the cats themselves exploring and meeting people makes the worldbuilding feel so natural; I really like it.
this show is “cats adopting owners” propaganda (alongside good ol’ domestication)

I mean it would be wild but this show has been…
maybe. I think a theme of the show has been people focusing on an item to some ends, but the actual solution to their problems being something else, and that item itself only catalyzing/motivating/facilitating them. Kihachi was focused on the catalog, but the best it had was hints, and he had to piece things together himself (this is the most blatant, since the catalog is literally his own dreams). This episode was supposedly about the device to talk to the dead, but we’re clearly shown that it was Inako’s efforts that really convinced the proprietress to be open to moving on. I would guess that Seiroku plays a similar role for Yosuke somehow.

Unfortunately, the emotional side of this episode didn’t really hit for me–we haven’t really gotten to know Imari, while Shizuku had some more development courtesy of Ouka. (Imari’s backstory itself was also weaker than Shizuku’s.)
I love all the yuri in this episode. I’ll take a full season please. That, and Mizuka’s eyeballs falling out. The comedic timing really worked for me, especially at the end, Mizuka sticking her head back in to ask for stretches, immediately smash cut, and then Ouka being completely bewildered at how she [got into her swimsuit]/[was transported]; that was simply perfect

intentional or not, I like how the story makes me empathize with mom–I want to protect Kuro, even though I’m fully aware how toxic it would be to completely lock her down. As an aside, since it’s clear that dad is a bit of a playboy, I wonder if the hints towards mom being a bit toxic will get explored as well?
word of advice to Minami-kun, the alpha move to assert dominance when dad asks “are you dating”, is “not yet”
just putting this out there. I don’t think Kotaro understands how many people are into getting stepped on
I don’t see where the story can go from here. We’ve peaked. I’m sobbing
(just kidding, but I have such high expectations for this show now that I am a little worried it won’t be able to live up to them–I’m really looking forward to next week)

idk if it’s because of me being bad at faces, but I’m having trouble telling Shizuku from Ouka from time to time… I’m sure it’ll get better as the season goes on though.
Not sure how I feel about the (apparently mostly Mizuka) fanservice? It looks like it’s going to be pretty regular. Usually that’d turn me off, but at least with their line of work, it is a kinda common stereotype? … I think I don’t mind it as long as it doesn’t get more egregious.
I adore Shizuku & Svetlana, they’re great ;-; The animation of them holding hands was so good, as well as the silks coming down at the start of the aerialist act, and the finale too–I don’t know how much of it was rotoscoped/CGI but it was cut quickly enough that I didn’t actually catch anything when watching it. I’m really enjoying this show c:

I’m really digging the way the plot gets weaved together generationally; meeting old characters has that cozy feeling of meeting an old friend c: (I guess literally, in this episode)
I love how Kurobane is depicted as the blind leading the blind as he’s teaching the young prince about the world. It calls back to how the dragon did the same thing–mimicking his mom, but not quite understanding everything, and learning as he went (as parents do!)
- Comment on [Episode] Victoria of Many Faces • Tefuda ga Oume no Victoria - Episode 3 discussion 4 weeks ago:
I was pleasantly surprised at how good the dancing animation was! … given the animation budget has been a little tight. :P The cut to flashback as Jeffery’s carriage enters a tunnel, and then cutting back out on the wheels/gloves, is tasteful and subtle–I like it.
I wonder what time period the bustles would place this in? I’d be interested to know if the setting has been period-accurate or more of a mishmash of vibes (not that that would take away from the story; just curious)

that is the most stylish trash bag I have ever seen. does it have pockets too? Also, the one shot with her storming away from her mom is framed so the fountain looks like some kind of bubble/shell barely holding her in; that was really neat
personal taste, of course, but the pacing and voice acting and directing of this episode felt so immersive and the tension felt so palpable. It’s a basic story arc that’s just really solidly executed, and the payoff is so satisfying! I really enjoyed it.

I love the realistic representation both of Fuyutsuki’s disability, and the way Sorano second-guesses himself constantly out of fear (not the parts where he’s just scared though). I know Sorano’s character arc is probably going to be all about getting out of his own head, so I’m not exactly faulting him for being the way he is… but when he does go out of his way to make a move, it really warms me up to him.
I don’t know if this is intentional, but having a blind FL makes it really hard not to empathize with her condition–I’m constantly acutely aware of how the world must feel like through her “eyes”. All the little auditory details really stand out. (Too bad I don’t understand enough Japanese to close my eyes and just listen to the show.)
I like that they went to the effort of (plausibly) animating her right-hand on the piano, but I guess doing the left hand too was too much work :p
- Comment on [Episode] Victoria of Many Faces • Tefuda ga Oume no Victoria - Episode 2 discussion 5 weeks ago:
there hasn’t been much explicit foreshadowing (apart from the ending scene), but it did make me a bit nervous when she was doing the opposite of what she explicitly laid out last episode–not scoping out her new place, telling everyone where she lives, telling Jeffrey about her past
I chalked it up to showing how she’s subconsciously fallen for Jeffrey already, but it’d be pretty neat if it actually is foreshadowing for later
