I’m not sure if you use the term tankie correctly.
Quite right. I was using it this way because it is used often incorrectly on Lemmy and I figured it would get the point I was making across.
But I can never agree with a tankie claiming to share those values while supporting regimes that would make even marx and lenin vomit (or I hope so, even though I’m not their fan and don’t know that much about them).
Very easy to end up sharing those values and supporting regimes that don’t agree simply with the prevalence of misinformation, or sometimes when a difference in priorities is masquerading as a difference in values. As someone who is not a fan of nation states in general, I just try to sus out if people are in ironically on board with atrocities or just disagree about the history but would be horrified if they believed.

Yes! 6 Book series, and the first is Furies of Calderon. Trigger warnings for sexual violence and sex trafficking, but its a neat little series based on the idea of crossing the lost Roman legion and Pokémon if that doesn’t bother you.
Has several cute romances and the wolf people are absolutely sick. They come in during book 2.

the litmus test for tankies is whether they blindly support modern era china, russia, and nk, all authright empires
This is pretty close to my own thoughts, though my definition might go more into the ideological underpinnings of those positions. There’s also a lot of leeway in the “blindly” on that one, and I would guess I am less likely to label someone a tankie than others here.
The term is thrown around pretty loosely on Lemmy. I’ve been called a tankie on here for criticizing democrats and for disagreeing with specific criticisms of the Trump regime (things like going after Melania’s nudes or other things I find entirely trivial next to the monstrous crimes) so I expected it to be taken as the more vibes based usage here.

Tankies as a whole, no. Individual tankies absolutely could be. Also it is quite possible to be honorable and still evil, you can be a villain and still be honest and idealistic enough to be trusted to act against a common enemy. If a tankie told me they would put me against the wall if they had the power, but would never betray me to ICE that is a slim common ground, but being that direct I might trust enough to share info or loosely coordinate against ICE

The key is finding the axis along which your interests align, and finding an individual enemy whose motivations are enough to trust. If you find for instance a halal butcher who the corporate player is trying to crush, you might find yourself someone with means and motivation to help you improve the world somewhat before your division reasserts itself. It isn’t so much ‘let’s compromise’ as it is ‘we might never get along, but destroying the meat corporation is a matter of survival for both of us’

I mean yeah that kinda works as a metaphor. Imagine if vegans and butchers teamed up to destroy Tyson foods before going back to being enemies

I think you’re probably right, I’d be quite happy if the ‘fight’ at the end between tankies and anarchists was simply diplomatic. Having met a few people who I would qualify as red-fash though, I am not fully optimistic on that count. My point is I guess that a pragmatic approach to building working relationships on a low-trust basis will get us to that point more readily than completely dismissing each other.

If their goals align with fash they can’t, that’s kind of the beauty of this relationship. Also gadara are personal relations not organisational ones in-universe, so it isn’t so much can tankies as a whole be trusted and more of a can this individual tankie be counted on to act against fash. Its also somewhat circumstance based, if I understand their motivations and ideals, I can probably determine if a given fash threat will be enough to keep their mind on the right target.

- Comment on Meta progression in roguelites was fun for a while, but it's starting to feel unrewarding 2 days ago:
Sort of. Roguelike’s defining feature as a genre is the reset of all player progression between runs, and the random generation of the runs themselves. Basic progression is transitory, so a name for progression that goes outside the runs and doesn’t reset is useful
- Comment on What if the Epstein files are the distraction? 1 week ago:
I think they are more or less. Like everything in them is monstrous and the people who perpetrated it deserve to be uncovered, but its also dangling the ‘easy’ solution to Trump in front of people. You’re less likely to do something substantial to resist the admin if you think any day now the bombshell is going to shatter their hold on power. Doesn’t matter how real the bomb is if waiting for it to go off stops you from using other means to save people now.
The more power Trump amasses through ICE, the less likely the Epstein files will ever make an impact. I guess my real thought is that getting justice for the crimes in the Epstein files depends on breaking their hold on power first, and not the other way around. Its real, its important, we should care about it, but it is not a means to also defeating fascism

Yeah, as a developer if you ever catch yourself thinking “my software should lie to the user”, probably take a step back and reconsider.

None for the male to male especially, because there is no way to involve it in a hot system that doesn’t involve having an exposed prong carrying the receptacles voltage. The female to female is still dangerous, but doesn’t inherently expose the circuit to whatever is in the environment.

One of the creatures I’m most worried about meeting camping or hiking is a moose. If they had a moose’s temperament they would have been one of the most terrifying things to walk the earth. They would also probably be getting hammered off fermented prehistoric fruit

Its not good against individuals, but it keeps this from becoming a space where they can congregate and try to attract people in the pipeline already.
Of course people aren’t automatons, but people can and do often unconsciously mirror and internalize things they see as normal in a community. Defederation does do a good job of keeping the bulk of Lemmy from being a Nazi bar, so that will happen less here. Its not a perfect solution, but its better than reddit in that regard.
I don’t know why you keep bringing up tankies, you do realize they founded the site right? I don’t think that gives them any special right to be here, but its also hard to imagine Lemmy without tankies. Its a part of what makes the space unattractive to fascists, and I’m not going to pretend I don’t enjoy seeing Hexbears tear their posts into pieces. I think the numbers of tankies here is a lot lower than some users would have you believe, and the main instances are largely defederated or default blocks. I’m fairly content with how that is working out.
As for the rest, you won’t be able to debate fascism into the ground. Fascists have to be crushed through collective action. People differ on what that would look like, in my ideal we would band together march through the streets and dismantle the engines of war that fascists rely on. Burn the factories, abolish their institutions, and set about the work of preparing the world for climate disasters. They’re not going to fall over and stop being fascists because of perfect inescapable logic. They’re going to stop being fascists when the tools they would use to oppress us both physical and cultural are broken and they see they cannot win. Your debate tactics will have a place breaking their cultural tools, but it has to be accompanied by a large enough unified front to make fighting back infeasible, and the removal of avenues for them to retake control by physical destruction of weapons, weapons manufacturing, and vehicles of war including those used by the police.

What fascists? They’re rarely here.
Yeah, that was my point when I said it was already in a better situation than Reddit with defederation. They’re rarely here because they get quickly defederated. It’s part of why I’ve stayed.
Tankies, too? They’re already here.
Yeah and they’re also mostly defederated too
- Comment on What would you want to see this site do differently from Reddit? 2 months ago:
I want Lemmy to do a better job than reddit at keeping fascists from being free to spread their poison. Lemmy is already better at this with defederation, but its something to keep an eye on always.
I think it would be cool if Lemmy were a bit bigger than it is now. Enough of a population to keep niche communities moving would be great, but Lemmy at its current size is a nice escape from a lot of the political landscape you see on Reddit or Twitter.

- Comment on Are Memoirs and Autobiographies partly fictional? How the f do people remember so much detail? 2 months ago:
My understanding is that a lot of memoirs are ghost written, so rarely actually authored by the person they are about. They interview people and then most likely invent detail to fill in the rest. That or they find actual photos of events or things and build out the detail that way. If you have a picture of an event and can see the decorations you can probably guess or imagine the smell. Likewise if family members have selfies or things like that you can fill in their outfits from there

Police involvement may help get him to back off, but be prepared for cops to ignore or minimize what she’s going through. Many cops are stalkers and abusers themselves. From personal experience having someone else to corroborate can help and also having extensive documentation can help get a PPI. I wish you the best of luck, its really not an easy situation and can escalate quickly.
