Interesting reasoning. I think they could have made it optional, but I suppose they’re balancing the whole game around it, so maybe it would have made a non-permadeath playthrough too easy/unbalanced.

My point is that a lot of papers that make headlines have participants numbering in the single or double digits, so this is at least better than that. Your point (I assume) is that a low number of participants should be viewed skeptically, and I agree with that.
