ActivityPub, aka the Fediverse, aka the open social web, aka what powers Piefed, is created, built by and built into the web, run by the W3C.

So while I agree that DRM sucks being built into the web, I disagree W3C is controlled by GAFAM. With DRM the W3C’s point was that everyone is doing it anyway at least we can have a standard way to doing it, making it easier for ends users to not have to jump through some new hoop and guaranteeing even that on alternative browsers, software or hardware aren’t excluded.

Big Tech do plenty of awful things we can give them direct credit for. W3C isn’t really one of them.

Yup that’s the one! The default one Peertube basically says anyone can join that. I’m paying attention and doing the moderation for the PTIndex so if anyone has issues with it, let me know! :)

For those that don’t know Alt.Store is an alternative App Store. The EU is forcing Apple and Google to allow alternate stores. These got some funds, like a lot, to build an open store. Alt Store is it. They’ve build Fediverse INTO their App Store, so ANYONE running the app store will be connected to the Fediverse.

Others have done this as well. Basically a trojan horse of freedom and openness being added to all kinds of projects atm. :D

I’m creating content and YouTube pulls from my Peertube. So I’ll never lose it. All of these content creators are leaning on Patreon as none of them can count on ad revenue anymore. So people are already doing it.

And Peer tube will never fully replace YouTube, but also, it doesn’t have to. Your local library, school, church, community space, doesn’t need ad revenue.

The AI stuff has real economic implications for sure, but it can’t last. IMO anyway. I just try to stay focused on fostering the fediverse and staying away from all of that other crap. I think small local communities for social web is the real winner for us.

I recommend Peertube. There’s not much there yet, but myself and others are trying.

Also, did you know you can upload your video to Peertube and have YouTube pull it via RSS? That’s what I’m doing!

All of my stuff you’ll find on Peertube and I don’t have to do anything else to get it up on YouTube.

Cory was talking about years ago. The FSF helped prevent it, but this is the kind of meetings Microsoft is willing to have to lock down systems. I think the rest of the world is now aware of US Big Tech and hopefully will steer clear. But yeah, we almost were in deep trouble.
