When I say quality I'm not talking about like Hollywood. I'm more trying to talk about good, fun, no misinformation, NP hate speech etc. Right now I've funded this nonprofit myself. And I have so much I can put into it. I'm just trying to give folks choice as well. I talk with a lot of people and while I've been able to recommend platforms people kind of turn off if I don't ha e a direct way to help them. And lots of folks don't want to trust some random dude, but are more open when they hear it's a real business.
As for charging for storage, I don't know if we'll do that. Right now my goal is to get people involved. Hopefully donations, or sponsorships or grants can help with that. It was one avenue of thought.
- Comment on 2 weeks ago:
Any thoughts, suggestions, etc, I'm always open to hearing it. :-) Hell, the good luck is still a great start. Thank you. We'll need it.
- Comment on 2 weeks ago:
I already have some folks interested in joining. I didn't want it to be attached to me as a personal entity, so no. I don't think it's backwards. You can't ask people to come to a restaurant that doesn't exist yet.
Maybe it is. I've never run a business. So this might all flop. But I have to try at least. I personally believe the Fediverse is the next evolution of the web. And we need to help it where ever we can.

It's just an idea at the moment. I don't know if it's feasbile, practical, or even allowed legally. Hence why I have to talk to my accountant.
But my idea is to generate income either through donations, funding drives, sponsors in the banner, etc. Or to do like a service where you can upload X amount of videos for $/month.
Then once we've hit break even, assuming we do (yes I know this is a difficult task atm), to share the additional revenue with content creators.
- Comment on 2 weeks ago:
Definitely a difficult task. Thinking more of a service fee for storage space or faster transcoding maybe. IDK we're still figuring it out. Also checking with an accountant about maybe being able to do a revenue share or something for content creators. All very much a work in progress though.
- Comment on 2 weeks ago:
I agree. We're in a chicken and egg problem. No creators because no viewers, no viewers because no creators. I've started Fireside Fedi to help make some kind of content. I'm setting up this NonProfit to show there's an actual business behind it. I've opened the Peertube to attempt to make that barrier to entry lower.
I have some ideas on how to help people upload to multiple places easier, but I'm no dev and need to talk to a friend I could probably interest.
Thank you for the welcome. :-)
I'm running my own auto-follow index at ptindex.btfree.org if you'd like to get added to it.
Also going to attempt to create a search index this week. I have found far too many unsavory instances on the public on. So attempting to provide value with building our own.
- Comment on 2 weeks ago:
Yup. I'm never going to be able to give Youtubers Youtube money. But I'm asking my accountant about some kind of rev share or something. It's still a work in progress. This instance though is to help onboard those that are interested in an alternate platform that do it for their community. Hard ask, but we'll be here for the long haul, hopefully. :-D

Let us know your thoughts! I've been using it for years. Definitely some jank, definitely not for everyone, but again it's been pretty good for me. And if you really want you can run your own server.

Lol that's an absolutely fair request. Have you asked on Element github? Sounds like a Mich needed feature.

Matrix via Element works great for me personally and it's available now. :-D

Happy to have folks on e2ee matrix. It supports calling directly and group voice and video chat rooms quite well IMO. :-)

Cory is amazing. I interviewed him on Fireside Fedi and that dude has so many well thought out points. He changed my mind on Threads coming into the Fediverse.

This has been tried and tried again. The first time I remember seeing this was in the '90's where a "free" dial up ISP was trying this. NetZero maybe? Didn't work then, won't work now. They'll pay out so little it won't be worth it. Don't do it kids!

That's because it is another bubble. They're all bubbles IMO. Since the boom of the internet they've all been scrambling from one fools gold rush to the next. Crypto, nft, metaverse, AI. Heel even social media that was given freely isn't returning the expected investments and that's why they're all enshitiffying.

Thank you so much! It's nice to know others agree. I've been so concerned with all of this, thinking I'm the only one thinking this, but I'm not. We're ALL thinking this. And I've been having an absolute BLAST. Not just for myself, but doing my Fireside Fedi show and even working towards setting up my nonprofit BT Free. We'll see where it all goes. Maybe it just us, but at least we have each other. :-) Thank you for the kind words of support. <3

I'm not doing a publishing platform really. And I can't seem to get email going. I've tried with MailerSend and while I know I can send email, through swaks, Ghost just won't. Someone told me it only uses MailGun, which I attempted to set up and after 2 days the DNS verification didn't go through, even though I konw for a fact it was there. And at this point I really don't want lock in to a specific service if that's true.

That looks really nice! Thank you for the recommendation. Still trying to figure out what to use. :-)

Downvotes are because a lot of folks are against ChatGPT and LLMs. We're going through MANY information transitions in the last 40 years and yet another holy grail is difficult to swallow. If you want to ask ChatGPT that's fine, but I'm trying to get folks to foster the Fediverse and make it more welcoming, more valuable, and heck just help people find us. Use the tools you want, absolutely. But we also need to find ways to help promote the Fediverse.
- Comment on Stop Internet Searching and Start Asking on Fediverse? 5 weeks ago:
Hey thanks! Just a point of advice starting a conversation with "that's fucking stupid" isn't exactly seen as useful or helpful information. I'm just attempting to start conversations and help promote the fediverse so that it continues to grow. If you want to offer any helpful advice instead of being negative, that's be great.
