i work at a library. please put the books in the spot labeled book return. it may not seem like it but because there are so few people working there just a few people in the library can keep us so busy we will miss the books you put down. also, check if your library has an ebook/audiobook thing like Libby. the wait times can be long but it's still pretty cool if you're into those.

- Comment on Why do languages sometimes have letters which don't have consistent pronunciations? 2 weeks ago:
evolution happens for all things that self-replicate, not just life. languages self-replicate through those who use them and as such change over time with leftovers like we often see in life.

- Comment on When did Cash for Chritianity become a thing? When even Jesus the son of god wouldn't stand for it in a church? If they preach why don't they practice from the bible? 1 month ago:
it became a thing because the catholic church was (still is) actually the leftovers of the roman empire, and acted like an empire as a result (the only reason they dont today is because they no longer have the power to crush nations). this lends false legitimacy to others trying to use Christianity as a platform for personal gain.

its probably helpful for the people it describes. not everyone understands how lease agreements work, even in the basic way the flyer talks about.

if you dont love her enough for marriage, dont get married. you didn't "take" anything as long as you didn't manipulate or coerce her. their religion is not your problem. that said, if the baby is yours you do have a responsibility to help raise and support the child.
- Comment on Can we please stop arguing about whether Bluesky is decentralized? 2 months ago:
thats not a whole instance though. thats just a place for an account to be. on activity pub platforms anyone can just make an entire indepent and independently functional instance of the platform.

- Comment on Can we please stop arguing about whether Bluesky is decentralized? 2 months ago:
but can I use a random old computer I have in my house to run an instance as long as there are a managable number of users? renting a server isnt self hosting. making one yourself is self hosting.
- Comment on Can we please stop arguing about whether Bluesky is decentralized? 2 months ago:
bluesky is technically decentralized, but the way it does it makes self-hosting all but impossible due to storage requirements. because of that, it really isnt. its like how a lot of ai models are 'open-source' even though the training data isnt available and the ai is still effectively a black box. it isnt decentralized unless anyone can make an instance, just like how it isnt open-source unless you have access to everything that makes it work (yes, by this definition chromium and android aren't truly open-source, and I stand by that).

i wouldnt say so. what makes it extreme is that it sits at the far end of the political spectrum. a good analogy would be hot and cold (I'll use Fahrenheit bc I'm American). anywhere from 60-80 degrees is generally tolerable even if it may not be comfortable. 90 degrees is a temperature nearly nobody likes being at but it isnt extreme, its just uncomfortable. 100 degrees still isnt quite extreme, but it is dangerous if you aren't careful. anything above that is an extremely high temperature. you could mirror that onto the other side of the tolerable range I mentioned and it would be the same. extreme does not mean unpopular, it means so far outside of a tolerable range as to be excessively bad (whatever constitutes 'bad' in-context, often dangerous). unpopular is a separate, arbitrary thing that only describes approval and not how extreme something is.
