My wife works at the Seattle Zoo. Two weeks ago, she was visiting a friend on a different team at work, and they got a little too loud laughing and catching up…they woke up Bobbi. She was not pleased.

I’ve been rocking my same hue lights for 8 years. I love having blue and red in the same light fixture. Creates a nice night purple with funny shadows.

What instance should I make an account on? I can’t use my lemmy account, right?

Piefed has so many issues. It’s great at adding new features, but it’s so bad at free speech.

Huh? You just linked a community on lemmy.world. That’s a lemmy instance. The person above you is referring to piefed. You don’t understand the code.
Piefed has all the shit code that bans a bunch of stuff. They also delete your comment if it starts with a gif link. And then put your social score down one. They also block you from downvoting if your votes are negative (more downs than up). There so much dumb shit because there are against actual free speech.

Very true! It all funnels up. That helps me understand a little better. Thanks!

It’s not nice that I have downvotes for asking a question I want to understand how hurting local businesses helps? Maybe I’m thinking about it wrong?
For my local businesses that I go to, I know the owners. Technically that’s still good faith to make sure they’re not actually owned by a mega conglomerate that has 51% invested in them, but still.

The no shopping seems weird to me when I mostly go to local breweries or friend owned bars or small independent coffee shops where the owners and workers are leftists (all my usual third places). Supporting local helps my community. If this lasted longer and many people did this, then it would have a financial impact on these places. If they closed, some corpo owned bar/brewery/coffee could come in and just take their spot.
Can someone help me understand if protesting and hurting local is worth it?
- Comment on Update: Disrupt the Amazon/Melania movie premiere weekend 1 week ago:
Amazon Prime Video and Amazon the online store are two separate apps. This will have no impact unless it’s googled, and we push the book to the top. But simply searching “melania movie” will filter out the book.
We’re also way too small of a community (the fediverse at large even) to even push that kind of thing to impact any SEO.

- Comment on Regular gym-goers probably avoid the gym on New Years Day because it's too crowded 5 weeks ago:
Exactly what my therapist said when I was talking about drinking less in the new year. She just said, why not just start small now and do smaller beers or different kind of drinks when you go out instead right now? Honestly made too much sense. Kinda wild that I didn’t think about it until then.
- Comment on Article: I switched to eSIM in 2025, and I am full of regret 5 weeks ago:
I love eSIM because one day on the bus I was tired of AT&T speeds being shit in my commute, so I decided to switch carriers. By the time I walked home from the bus, I was done releasing my number and setting up my new eSIM to my new carrier and immediately got faster speeds. It just worked.
I completely understand if you’re changing numbers all the time it could be annoying, but it was just a simple activation for me.
- Comment on “Infinite” scroll not working for others? 5 weeks ago:
Yep. I replied to @TheDude@sh.itjust.works in another thread yesterday. Hopefully it’s just another lemmy update, but this lasted 3 weeks last time. We need an automated system to upgrade. I keep touting sh.itjust.works as a “high uptime server” but degraded uptime isn’t uptime.

Yea, roll back from everyone having free shit and some people paid for stuff to people have nothing even if paid for.
They should just accept that shit’s fucked and let everyone keep everything. It’s fucking bytes and pixels.
- Comment on NVIDIA Puts 100-Hour Monthly Limit on All GeForce NOW Subscriptions 1 month ago:
Do you think Dropout will enshitify? It’s one of the best streaming services, and tons of people on the fediverse say it’s the only subscription they have. They raised their prices last year by $1, but let people keep their old price if they stay subscribed.
- Comment on I love Dune! 1 month ago:
I dunno… highly depends on the drug. I go to some a music fest in the summer and almost all the people there are the nicest and most caring hippies you’ll meet. Booze is banned, so it’s a different vibe than most music fests, but I think it works out so well.
I feel like in today’s world being caring and nice is close to prophetic because we don’t see enough of it. It really does hit different seeing a ton of strangers look out for each other.
- Comment on How could you do this to me? 2 months ago:
Just make a live boot drive and try it out! Maybe get a little partition setup. I’ve been running Kubuntu for 3 weeks just fine! I am tech savvy though, but most of the things I needed to be savvy at were only because my PC is also my media server. It was less than 1.5 hours to set up gaming and all my window management options and whatnot. And now everything just works.

The Seattle zoo also rejected federal funding with these strings. My wife lost her job because of it. Because it was just for one program and the no-DEI was organization wide…
Apparently the Portland Zoo signed it… No one expected that shit. We both let her parents know that this is because of their vote in another state.

Being polyam in Seattle is great. All of my coworkers know I’m poly and just accept it. All the bartenders know too. Makes it easy for them to start the tab.
- Comment on Did it really used to be common for guys to go to a bar every night like in Cheers or The Simpsons? 3 months ago:
I’m an outlier because I live in a walkable neighborhood in a city. But I have 10 breweries within walking distance around my house. I know the owners by name for 2 of these breweries and the bartenders know me for 4 of them. I think they all know my dog.
I usually go with my wife and/or girlfriend about 2-4 days a week, but it’s still very much a hang out.
We’re also Friday regulars to a semi-close bar every Friday because I won a free beer/week for a year in a $25 raffle!

Seattle has commercially compostable plastic straws. They feel pretty much like plastic but are kind of matte. Even the single use forks/knives/spoons from restaurants are like that. But then again we do large scale compost across the city.
