- Comment on YSK What to do if someone’s choking: Evidence says begin with back blows 4 days ago:
Chest compressions is for when the heart stops, and actually won’t do anything for choking. Abdominal compressions, where you put pressure on the diaphragm (not the ribs) is for choking. Also, if you do chest compressions for a stopped heart, you’re going to break a few ribs. Unless you’re doing in wrong.

Chest thrusts as in chest compressions? Like whet the heart stops? What if the heart is still beating??

The same thing happened to my son. Luckily I had first aid training and actually knew how to do the Heimlich. I didn’t know that you were supposed to do back blows first though. When I learned, they just told me to go straight for the Heimlich.

I had to wait 45 minutes for an ambulance when I thought I was about to die. You’ll fall unconscious within 5 minutes. Die within the next 5. Even if you manage to make the call, they won’t know what the hell is wrong with you because you can’t talk. Learning to save yourself in that situation is extremely important, because actual first responders won’t make it there on time.

My ex actually sent my therapist MULTIPLE emails to try to share her side of the story, and also to try to get him to share confidential information about me. Apparently in all his years of therapizing, he’d never seen anything quite that crazy.

I think even if you have a metal 3d printer, it would still not be suitable for anything where strength of the piece is critical. Iirc, metal 3d printing basically just joins metal filings together using some kind of medium, making is no much weaker than a forged or machined piece.

deep ocean would be better for this, you can shed heat easier and also, we can turn it into a reef when the world finally realizes that AI is stupid and a waste of resources.

Did you know that the correct pluralization is octopuses or octopoda, not octopi? This is because the -pus ending in octopus to es from the Greek word for foot, not prom latin.
- Comment on She's out of town and I'm cleaning her entire collection as a surprise 3 months ago:
you’re supposed to wash cast iron with water, then soap then water again. then you dry, put it on a hot stove, and once all the water evaporates away, you rub it down with some oil on a cloth/paper towel, and get that real hot. then you can turn off the heat, and wipe off excess oil before putting it away. It’s not as straightforward as just tossing it into the dishwasher, but it’s not as complicated as some would have you believe. also, you can wash cast iron. soap doesn’t hurt it.
- Comment on Controversial startup's plan to 'sell sunlight' using giant mirrors in space would be 'catastrophic' and 'horrifying,' astronomers warn 3 months ago:
they’ll start by selling sunlight at night, but we know that it’ll end up being that we have to either pay to have sunlight in the daytime OR pay to not have sunlight at night.

I’d just be living in a small town, digging through trash cans, giving fish to the local homeless man, giving beer to the alcoholic and mostly just planting an ungodly amount of fruit trees on my land.
- Comment on The Sodium-Ion Battery Revolution Has Started 4 months ago:
honestly, I’m fine with a lower range. when i go into the office , it’s 15 km away from my house. i can charge up at home, drive to work, come back and charge it up for the next day, so as a daily driver it might be fine. The problem comes when I want to go on a road trip, which is my preferred method of going medium to long distance. I avoid flying like the plague, and trains are really expensive for some reason.
