- Comment on Introducing Proton Sheets 1 week ago:
There are probably a lot of programms that do aspects of Excel better. But the combined might you weild if you know how to use Excel is very powerful. I tried LibreOffice and OnlyOffice and the spreadsheet part of those office suites is the roughest one until today.
But my comment was more about how much of our economy probably runs on Excel. And I experienced how badly Excel and for example LibreOffice Calc plays together, it makes switching very hard. A complex .xlsx is far from being rendered and calculated correctly in LibreOffice.

Good luck.
If Excel ever gets replaced, then we know that we overcame Microsoft.
- Comment on Swiss government urges people to ditch Microsoft 365 and others due to lack of proper encryption 1 week ago:
We have a lot of different political and government bodies. Like the “checks and balances” the US had. So when you read “Switzerland wants to…” it could be:
- A survey of people living in Switzerland
- A initiative (an official political vote done by the swiss citicens)
- One big or multiple parties signing an agreement
- A group of cantons or communal legislative or executive politicians
- A group of semi-official people (like the conference of cantonal privacy-advocates (“Kantonale Datenschützer”, keine Ahnung wie all das Zeug auf Englisch heisst, Hilfe)
- Our parliament or a comitee in it
- Our other parliament or a comitee in it
- The federal court
- The federal chancelor
- The federal government
I probably forgot a few and misspelt a lot but you get the idea. And all of them are different elected or appointed persons, with their own opinions.

Don’t forget to backup your subscriptions. Its really easy, it just generates a opml textfile, which every other reader could import.

What would that mean for Linux distros? It seems like it could be a law that cuts off the competition. Like amazon who is very selectively for better working conditions when the know that no competitior can fulfull them.

- Comment on Dedicated music server or all-in-one media server? 3 months ago:
Symphonium supports playlists. You can make a own manual playlist or a “smart” playlist, which has the x amount of least listened to songs, the 10 highest rated ones and so on. Everything is on the listening device local, so you have to backup for yourself. Symphonium is really really customizable.
Screenshot_20250829_135759 Sorry for german. A setting for an intelligent playlist for all highly rated songs which I havent listented to in 70 days. (AND/OR) can be set for rules. Its amazing.
Music recommendation is not really a thing unfortunately by the nature which most of download->server->jellyfin->client systems run. I sometimes use listenbrainz (by the musicbrainz team) like lastfm
- Comment on Dedicated music server or all-in-one media server? 3 months ago:
Jellyfin works nicely for music, as long as you use a good client. The native jellyfin mobile app is not optimized for music. I use symphonium for android listening and am very pleased with it. More settings than Id ever need, different options for downloading/caching songs on device, support for subtitles and all.
- Comment on A handful of people are slowly killing over 8 billion people, but we're expected to sit idly by and let it happen 3 months ago:
Nonviolent but measures like unions and strikes do very much work. I just say that annectotaly but there is probably some study about it.
They are probably considered “violent” or maybe only “agggrssive” behaviour by the capitalist class, because it threatens their income/revenue. Thats enough to make them change.
Completly overthrowing a whole economic system might work but is a big ask. Everyday people can do little things. Like unionizing, standing up to the boss or maybe even stand together with the boss and against the next higher-up.

To be fair we know that a HL Sequel was worked on by Valve several times but always scrapped in various stages of production. So the rumours really came from somewhere reasonable and not just from pure speculation and desperation.

In Switzerland we have sensors in the streets at most crossings. And behind it I assume, is a determinate algorithm whoch decides who has green for how long. This mainly is done to avoid the backing up of one crossing into another.

- Comment on I benchmarked 6 different metal USB sticks 1 year ago:
I have a stick dangeling on my keychain too, also in heavy use. But due to my Mac-Friends i need one with usb-c. So I settled for this: 81gqM6ouEcL.SL1500-247235771 The hinge is still holding on since almost a year. Also have two of those: sandisk_ultra_dual_usb_c_flash_drive_3-1009136228 But they seem a lot cheaper, flimsier and I probably got ripped off by a dropshipper.
Havent benchmarked them, if anyone knows of a comparison as good as this one for “dual” usb sticks, let me know!
