I’ve always wondered this. For now I’ve settled on the hypothesis that all the first astronomers all had astigmatism.

Pretty much just that Arch Linux will be more secure, stable and reliable.

Yeah so what’s your problem with what he said then?

He’s simply disputing the assertion that ugly people aren’t allowed to make music.

That’s a number you just made up.
Either way, use a blacklist then. If you really care about what sites they access, use a whitelist.

Exactly. It’s like a tacit admission that the only reason to have this stuff is for people like Joe.

I’m responding to the more general sentiment you and BearOfaTime expressed, which is that one is ‘always trying to solve strange problems on Linux.’ KDE is being offered as a solution in this instance, but it’s also just a default in its own right. Contrary to how you’re characterising it, it’s not a distro, it’s not difficult to install, and it absolutely is not obscure.

Windows is installing updates and may need to restart. This might take a while. :)

Well if you like control panel, I’ve got good news for you. Upgrade to Windows 8/10/11 and you’ll get two of them. :)

I switched over to Linux because I was tired of fighting Windows to make it behave the way I wanted while struggling to solve obscure issues because of meaningless error messages. I use my Linux machine for gaming/work and everything in between. The only reason I boot into Windows these days is for VSTs and Photoshop.
And I’m not suggesting that Linux just works and never has any issues, but it’s ludicrous to suggest that Linux doesn’t work in a way that Windows just does. If Windows just worked I wouldn’t have to fix stupid issues for my family and friends all the fucking time.

I know several people who would switch over to Linux if Windows cost that much and it would be: everyone I know.
- Comment on Microsoft is bringing annoying Windows 11 Start menu ads to Windows 10 2 months ago:
It’s a moot point, because the average user doesn’t install any OS on their system. They get people like us to install it for them.
They don’t generally solve their own Windows problems either. OEM is the real bulwark of of Windows dominance. Usability and familiarity is one aspect, but I’ve set a good few people up with Linux at this stage and very few of them know what a kernel is, or what Plasma/Gnome are, because they don’t need to (same way they didn’t know or care what NT was either).

You’re just assuming that installing KDE was a solution to some obscure problem he had instead of being his existing system.
That’s how it’s been for me at any rate. I read a lot of your post while thinking ‘I’ve never had that problem.’ After the first day of setting up the installation, I don’t really do any meaningful tweaking of the OS. Personally, I switched over from Windows because I was tired of fighting it to make it behave how I wanted and solving obscure problems with meaningless error messages.

You can mount and sync your OneDrive files with rclone, which I think is much nicer than OneDrive.

That doesn’t preclude what I said, though. When there is installing to be done, it’s usually the tech friend that’s called in to do it. I know this by virtue of being that person and having been called on to do it several times.
- Comment on Microsoft Ruined Windows 2 months ago:
And that raises a good point, since average users get their tech friends to do the installing anyway. I’ve switched many over to Linux because of this.
- Comment on Microsoft Ruined Windows 2 months ago:
I’ve also switched a lot of people over recently! And I do wonder what will happen when a critical mass of tech-literate people switch over to Linux. A lot of people only get by with Windows because their tech-literate friends help them with it.

Haha for sure. I agree with all that. I’m a professional musician and play with random locals in pubs and friends all the time. I would say there is quite a healthy culture for that in Ireland.
I was mainly interested in software (that isn’t Spotify) that would allow me to explore more musics.

I’m a bit confused. I don’t think I could possibly fit any more musical instruments in my house.

Any suggestions for alternatives? I switched to Apple Music a while back because it allows me play my own files on any of my devices, but for obvious reasons I’d prefer something else.

Install Linux. It’s almost easier to install than Windows at this point.
