- Comment on Would you buy "self-hosted in a box" hardware? 2 months ago:
We already have that, the first problem is we have like a dozen of them, a few are even well supported. The second problem is that usually the technical knowledge required to set up the systems are still lower than the technical knowledge required to keep it running.

My friend, if you don’t think that’s scummy then I think you’re a little bit too acclimated to marketing scams.
- Comment on Microsoft donates the Mono Project to the Wine team 2 months ago:
You’re not wrong, but if we want companies to keep doing things for good PR, we need to reward them for it.
They’re basically giant badly trained dogs that happen to control every aspect of our lives.
- Comment on Regarding this picture, where do you think quantum computers lie and why? 2 months ago:
They work, but it’s expensive and POC stage. They’re mostly just not scaled to the level that we think we can take them to.
- Comment on CrowdStrike unhappy with “shady commentary” from competitors after outage 2 months ago:
Not wrong, but they fucked up due to incompetence, not just some random preventable accident.
From the technical details I’ve seen, just having a basic testing process/environment should have easily prevented this. That should be the bare minimum.
- Comment on Few suggestions for lemmy world : posting on profile and live chat 2 months ago:
I agree that lemmy shouldn’t take it on itself, but I do think deeper integration into other foss systems is not a bad plan. Being able to integrate a matrix instance directly with a lemmy instance would be fancy and I think exploring stuff like that further could be the key to finally getting us beyond just seeking parity with reddit.

Can you afford enough lawyers to prove it?
- Comment on If you bought a 3D printer for personal use, was it worth it? 2 months ago:
Sounds like you’re talking about a bltouch or a clone, they were in the market super early, I think they were one of the first.
There are more options out there now, but most do work on the same concept.
- Comment on If you bought a 3D printer for personal use, was it worth it? 2 months ago:
It’s almost definitely a pain in the ass, but you can probably add self leveling to your existing printer.

It’s ethical relativism y’all!

It’s unethical because it’s gross and I don’t like it.

- Comment on Logitech has ‘no plans’ for a subscription mouse 3 months ago:
They never really did, it was a talking point brought up initially by the interviewer and they guided the CEO into responding to it so that they could have some clickbait headlines. CEO should have known better than to engage and they sure learned that lesson, they’re not going to be talking to that outlet again, but it’s really just shitty interviewing that created this entire news cycle.
- Comment on Ingredience 3 months ago:
Carnivores tend to taste like their diet which can obviously vary a lot. You’ll find a hundred different answers, but mostly it’s not great, if we had something like a ‘farm raised’ option it might at least be consistent.
- Comment on Google is discontinuing the Chromecast line 3 months ago:
Planned obsolescence is built into googles processes.
They’ve created an environment where your primary method of advancing in your career is only creating new things and there’s little to no options when choosing to support existing things. Some things have survived by chance and/or something to keep employees busy, but it’s unintentional.

- Comment on Imperfect, Linux-powered, DIY smart TV is the embodiment of ad fatigue 3 months ago:
The issue usually is proprietary streaming services, not a lot of interest from them on Linux/etc support and the unofficial options are usually kind of janky. That does make total sense but also kills it’s chances of getting wide support / adoption which limits the growth of the projects.
- Comment on Alexa Is in Millions of Households—and Amazon Is Losing Billions 3 months ago:
I kinda feel like voice search is just an inherently bad platform for shopping.
Supposedly… Home & Kitchen is the most popular category on Amazon, consumer choice comes into that so rapidly that it’s hard for it to make sense with just audio feedback or even a tiny screen like the show.

I kinda feel like that’s the entirety of good parenting. Some things have higher or lower priorities, but ideally, I want my children to be more competent than me in everything I know how to do and more.
- Comment on CrowdStrike Update Causes Global Microsoft Outage Affecting Banks, Airlines And More 3 months ago:
Been awhile since we’ve POCed Crowdstrike, but I don’t think you can set the cadence on updates for Crowdstrike. I believe Crowdstrike enforces auto-updates, pretty sure that’s at least the default setting.

I don’t think anyone ever said it could be convenient. I’m pretty sure I specifically said it was bad just not as bad as it could be.

I’m not a fan of this, it’s definitely not great, but I’ve tested the AI drive through lanes, not the worst possible future.
- Comment on Do you poweroff your server during night / unused times? 4 months ago:
I see where your head is at here, but it sounds like you’re focusing on containerized items. A lot of people are going to look at you real weird if you think of scaling down a container as equivalent to shutting down a server. We can all see where your mind is going and there is logic there, but it’s more akin to closing chrome when you’re not using it than it is to shutting down the computer running chrome.

Have you looked into specialized AI chips/accelerators at all if you really want to mess with it?
Way lower end than what you’re working with, but they have AI accelerator kits for something as small as a Raspberry Pi.

Looks like 2008, man, been awhile. I don’t know, I kinda think it’s a good story, a company saw a pirate site doing what it could be doing only better and instead of shutting it down, reached out and worked with them. Our alternative if crunchyroll wasn’t around would probably have been funimation being the streaming anime top dog too which feels like a darker timeline.

I think you can get service if you are a government or large company.
You’re so optimistic. It depends on how you define service, they will talk to you if they’re large enough, but it’s still a nightmare getting them to talk to each other within google, getting support is still problematic.

So weird, I’m old, but I still remember when Crunchyroll was part of the High Seas. It still throws me for a loop every once in awhile that it’s become a legitimate streaming service.
