- Comment on Starfield is a game people were "just not ready" for and it'll still come good at some point, reckons Fallout 4 composer 2 days ago:
I really liked a lot of the mechanics of Starfield. I think some people can get a bit overly-critical and “throw the baby out with the bathwater”, even if the baby is a little ugly too and has 13 toes in this analogy.
Ultimately I think it was a game killed mostly by poor writing and, consequently, a failure to tie that writing into interesting enemy variation.
The different types of human enemies all felt the same, there wasn’t enough variation when it came to robots or aliens, and these were used in uninspired ways pretty much uniform. The randomly generated locations etc. definitely added onto this.
I had a lot of fun with the ship and weapon customization, the core gameplay felt good to me. It is a game primed for a very fun and interesting New Vegas to its FO3, if they chose to go that route (which I doubt they will, alas).
One of my biggest issues is that it feels like a game written entirely by Libertarian Atheist Redditors from 2013. It is so completely out of touch with the current culture and political landscape that I can only assume the issue is that Bethesda, or at least the people responsible for this messat Bethesda, are Libertarian Reddit Atheists who haven’t matured in their understanding of culture and politics for 15 years, like you took Hank Green, Niel deGrasse Tyson, and pre-2020 Elon Musk, threw them in a blender, and asked the resulting mush to write a sci-fi setting.
The joinable factions are obviously supposed to be exaggerated stereotypes of Democrat and Republican politics as conceived by someone with a very shallow view of politics, but the thing about the Democrat and Republican parties is that 90% of the country fucking hates both of them. What’s your other option? Get a job? The pirates could have been fun but I’m not even going to get into how they were butchered. And the snake-worshipping religious zealots are the only major faction you can’t join, despite being the only mildly interesting one.

I remember reading an article about a month ago about how Kenyan writers were getting mad about being mistaken for AI because that’s just how they write, and the Faith emails are all from Kenya.
I’m not saying it’s not AI but that might be the reason why they sound that way.

- Comment on Condoms and contraceptives to become more expensive in China as Beijing accelerates push to lift birth rate 3 months ago:
Read the article. All they’re doing is getting rid of a tax exemption. The tax exemption existed because previous government policy was to reduce birthrates. Now that government policy is to increase birthrates, that exception was removed. They aren’t increasing costs by 5x or anything.

- Comment on Record breaker Starmer is the 'most unpopular PM since polling began' 5 months ago:
I think Starmer could be considered a reformer analogous to Stolypin, or perhaps Alexander II. In some ways, Starmer would have been considered a fairly radical social democrat able to appease the working classes, in another time. But now is not the time for moderate reformers who ultimately serve the existing ruling classes.
And the people who say to “Give Starmer a chance!” are the same who, in 1910, were bemoaning Alexander II and Stolypin’s assassinations because “We were just starting to get the reforms we’ve been asking for - and you radicals blew it for all of us!”
The time for reform is over. The people demand revolution.

Nasser in Egypt, Assad in Syria, Gaddafi in Libya, Hussein in Iraq, Mossadeq in Iran, Assad in Syria - if you challenge Western hegemony over the middle east in any way, you don’t last long. Same could be said for Yemen, Afghanistan, Algeria - any Middle-Eastern nation that has flirted with the ideas of Socialism or National Identity.

- Comment on Moscow strikes kill six in Ukraine; refineries hit in Russia 6 months ago:
Because, just like with Israel, Ukraine is not self-sufficient militarily. If the U.S. pulls aid, Russia wins the war. It is, by definition, a proxy war - at least on the American-Ukrainian side.
If America pulled aid or gave Ukraine a firm timeline, Ukraine would lose all leverage in negotiations. And as long as American guns, bombs, and dollars are flowing into Ukraine, Ukraine will not settle for the status quo.
A better way to think of the negotiations is that Trump and Putin are negotiating the post-war situation for America to agree to pull support to Ukraine.

The charities Imouhagh International, Kel Akal, Diaspora of the United States, and the Azawad Solidarity Association accuse them of crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Sounds like the the organizations complaining are mostly for the Western diaspora. Just makes me think of similar orgs for Ughyrs or Tibetans or w/e that are solely made up of people who work for the U.S. government or NGOs it funds.
I’d like to hear what the Tuaregs actually living in the area think.

- Comment on Urgent ‘do not eat’ warning issued for popular meal sold in Tesco and Morrisons 10 months ago:
There seems to be confusion in the comments over facts cleared up in the body text.
The error was mislabeling, which is the most common error in food production. They made perfectly uncontaminated Prawn and Lobster Lasagna and then put the wrong label on it. It should have been caught by quality control at the factory but mistakes happen.
Just earlier this week we had to pull a couple cases of Italian Sausage at work because they were accidentally labeled with a sell by of “Mar 15” instead of “May 15”.
