- Comment on You won: Microsoft is walking back Windows 11’s AI overload — scaling down Copilot and rethinking Recall in a major shift 1 week ago:
I can’t say I’ve had those issues myself, so my recommendation may not be valid in your case. I’d say maybe give Fedora with KDE Plasma a try, and try switching between X11 and Wayland sessions if issues persist.
I personally don’t like Ubuntu, but that’s mostly because of Canonical making the occasional sketchy decision.
On the whole, distro choice doesn’t matter quite as much these days, as most distros should work fine out of the box. Whatever issues you have should technically be solvable with a bit of troubleshooting.
Sometimes Linux just doesn’t play well with your setup. Good luck, and I hope you find something that works for you!

Won? They will do it again. The only winning move is not to play their game. Choose Free Software.

There’s this neat life hack where you drink enough and forget all about the taste - and most of the previous night, to boot!
I don’t actually drink though, tastes like shit.

Just to clarify, Bandai Namco has published some games on GOG. No RPGs though.

- Comment on Speed test pits six generations of Windows against each other — Windows 11 placed dead last across most benchmarks, 8.1 emerges as unexpected winner in this unscientific comparison 1 month ago:
I basically jumped from XP to 8.1 and I was amazed how much of an improvement 8.1 was on a technical level. Yes, the UI was horrendous, and any usability expert should have been able to tell you it was a terrible idea, but apparently they weren’t listened to. Luckily there was Classic Shell that restored a proper Start Menu, so I never had to use the horrible touch interface.
8.1 was the last good Windows (with caveats). When support ended I went back to Linux, because 10 and 11 are enshittified to all hell.

Backup. If you lose your Internet connection or GOG goes tits up, you don’t lose access to your installers.

Per Michal Kicinski on the GOG forums:
Please also be assured that financially GOG is very stable, and I personally have a quite extensive financial safety net in case of any needs. So while GOG is no longer part of a very big corporation (which actually has some pros too ;-)), it is very safe financially. There is really no need to back up your collections. If such a disaster would ever even theoretically happen, you would be clearly informed well in advance — but honestly, I cannot see any realistic scenario where this kind of danger would appear.

Not sure what this will mean in the long run, but my immediate reaction is positive. GOG has had taken steps towards enshittification, and if Michał can put it back on track, well, that’s great. We’ll have to watch and wait.
DRM free, forever.

Stallman outlined our choices and told us this is where we were headed back in the 1980’s. Since then, we have consistently made the wrong decisions. All is not lost, but the situation is dire.

You must understand: It’s not your TV, it’s LG’s, and they will do with it what ever they want, and not to your benefit. This is the future we chose.

I generally have nothing but a deep sense of loathing for marketing, but I genuinely feel bad for the people who have to try smearing lipstick on this pig.

Seems like the kind of guy I’d want in charge of my company. “Don’t buy my stuff” is some next level 4D marketing.

This brought to mind a collection of asshole admin stories from the early internet. With a bit of googling, it was The Bastard Operator From Hell. God, I haven’t thought of those since the 90s. I can’t believe I could even recall something like that.
Anyway, fuck users.

Yes, my migraines are mostly “silent” these days. As a teenager, I just had the headaches without aura, but that changed with age. Nowadays I get all kinds of weird and uncomfortable pre- and postdrome effects, like ocular aura, but rarely pain. I have a family member whose only migraine symptom is a crippling stomach ache. Migraines are super weird.
