This is the first comment about switching to Linux that makes me feel positively about the idea
- Comment on The Toilet Theory of the Internet: Google is serving an audience that wants quick and easy results. That may lead to disaster. 5 months ago:
Particularly an issue when you’re googling an obscure software issue, you just get spammed with the same copy/paste “troubleshooting” steps. Which usually boil down to “reinstall this completely unrelated driver”.
Just reading this caused a small spike of ice cold fury within my soul
- Comment on Is This the End of Plastic? Visa's New Technology Could Replace Physical Cards 5 months ago:
I remember on reddit once someone from the US complaining about people assuming their bar had EFTPOS machines/pay wave saying “You wouldn’t go to the grocery store without your wallet?!”
And me, in Australia just being like…but… I do? I almost never take my wallet with me to the grocery store…
(Although, because my student public transport card is the only thing I can’t put on my phone, going out for drinks is one of the few times I’m almost guaranteed to have my wallet) (also because I want to have backups if something goes wrong while I’m inebriated)

- Comment on I like this text. In which Lemmy community can I best share it ? Thanks. 6 months ago:
Thanks for letting me know that that community exists! It’s one of my favourite subreddit so there being a Lemmy alternative is great news!

Jesus. I’m extremely ashamed that I’ve never question the whale narrative before…
Thank you!
- Comment on Picture that sparked Microsoft's "SexGate" released by a whistleblower. 10 months ago:
Two relevant quotes from this article^Paywalled link, I’m afraid^
A summary of the book the author (Dr Linsey McGoey) wrote on the subject: “billionaires who make their fortunes through corporate practices that undercut workers and deepen inequality — like corporate tax avoidance, insufficient sick pay and the immoral gap in pay between executives and low-paid workers — are not the solution to problems they generate.”
“Asking Bill Gates to fix inequality is like asking an arsonist to hose down your house after he just set it on fire. Philanthropists might have the deep pockets to fund the fire engine and water hose, but the money is coming from making our houses unlivable in the first place.”
- Comment on What's your favorite game that you will NEVER finish? 10 months ago:
Horizon Forbidden West; I went on holiday just before the final mission and when I went to pick it back up, I discovered that my controller was fucked. Now I’m waiting for the PC remaster because, I still find using a controller slightly unnatural.
- Comment on Picture that sparked Microsoft's "SexGate" released by a whistleblower. 10 months ago:
My whole childhood the Gates was touted as this super altruistic, good rich person who was all about charity. It was only after I found out about the whole Oxford vaccine thing (indenting my aside/rant)
Gate’s urged Oxford to exclusively allow AstraZeneca the rights to their vaccine “rather than sticking to the university’s own guidance that any deal it makes include non-exclusive and royalty-free licensing”, a deal with no guarantee of accessibility or affordability. Given that the vast majority of the funding of this vaccine was public funds…fuck that.
that I found out that the Foundation was always just a way to rehabilitate an image of ruthlessness I never knew he had. I guess it worked, given how he was discussed when I was growing up, but hopefully he won’t be able to do it again.
- Comment on Legendary exit for a legendary creator 10 months ago:
It’s interesting how different people interpret attitude in vastly different ways. Because where you (and others I’ve seen in other threads) find him smug and an asshole, I only ever found him to be extremely sincere and excited to learn and educate.
Although, I’d love to know what channels you watch that cover similar topics! Wasting time on YouTube doesn’t feel as unproductive if the videos are educational…

- Comment on China’s BYD is selling more electric cars than Tesla 10 months ago:
I started seeing them in Sydney, like 3 months ago but suddenly they’re everywhere and a store opened down the road from me.
And every time I see the name my brain pronounces BYD as “buy” with a “d” on the end and makes a stupid pun about purchasing one.

Yeah, plus it feels like the trends for my age group are just the trends from younger people, but with a slight delay

Thanks for sharing! I ended up following it up with the video this creator did on BluScutti and this top comment from BluScutti himself genuinely made me tear up a bit:
“Amazing video scout! Its amazing to be in one of your videos since your videos are what got me into the Tetris scene in the first place.”
Just fucking cool

- Comment on How have you personally found the Lemmy community compared to its competition and other social media? 10 months ago:
The manosphere shit actually doesn’t bother me as much as the very casual, low effort stuff on meme communities that just make me feel completely valueless and like nothing will ever change.
- Comment on How have you personally found the Lemmy community compared to its competition and other social media? 10 months ago:
Honestly it’s mostly the very casual, low effort stuff on meme communities that I was thinking of last night when I commented. The incel shit, I can deal with. But it’s the casual objectification, as well as the diminishing of anything outside of a woman’s appearance that I find exhausting.

I wasn’t disagreeing that it’s been called both; I just haven’t heard the other name in a decade or so. Probably a filter bubble thing.
- Comment on Coincidence?! 10 months ago:
The traditional name, Uluru, is what is commonly used in Australia.
(I’m genuinely not trying to be a dick, I’ve just not heard the British name used in decades)

I was so hoping it had been resurrected by the dev because it’s such a neat keyboard.
