I really want to sign up for Beeper, but the fact I have to give them my phone number to sign up for a waitlist seemed like a red flag. How is their security profile?

Could be a hog house sewage slurry lagoon, I see what looks like a pump out on the far right corner. I'm not sure about the humps on the bottom, but they might control the current to avoid a whirlpool effect when pumping out the pond. Just guessing here.
- Comment on Heat-pump water heaters are a winner for the climate — and your wallet 11 months ago:
A heat pump pulls heat from the ambient air and accumulates it in the tank, unlike a conventional water heater which uses combustion or a resistance heater to generate the heat from an energy source. That is why heat pumps are generally much more efficient than other types of water Heaters, including on-demand Heaters which have a very high instantaneous load.
Heat pumps do have their weaknesses though, specifically they lose efficiency the colder the ambient temperature is, so if you live in the arctic circle this might not be the technology for you.
- Comment on Microsoft Hires Sam Altman Hours After OpenAI Rejects His Return 11 months ago:
This is devolving into the worst way this could have gone. If he had spun of a new startup at least it would have provided real competition to GPT, building out in-house Microsoft models when they already have OpenAI license is ick.

I think the Israeli government is authoritarian, and their scorched earth tactics against Palestinians are war crimes, but you're not doing the cause any favors by invoking the Nazis. Criticize their actual behavior.

I have been playing Shogun Showdown, which is a fun but difficult strategy roguelike "deck builder-ish". I'm not sure I'll stick with it through full unlocks. I have been tempted by Cobalt Core as well, though the price has bounced me off of it for this month at least.

Mastodon, you're talking about Mastodon, lol.
Anyway I'd build an service that provides free wifi at local businesses, then allows users to opt-in to a service that matches clients of those businesses with each-other based on common interests. Trying to encourage the establishment of hangouts / Third Places as a normal in society again.
Also possibly an application that tracks user input and the value of their input to the accomplishment of stated goals for the purpose of profit sharing. Essentially an automated accountability layer for cooperative projects and business ventures, integrated with automated project management based on Natural language processing.

It's unfortunate that Plume is on pause from active development.

Good question, this article is pretty fluffy, not a lot of hard data. Reads kind of like a fluffed up press release honestly.

@ooli tl/Dr "Photoncycle
Brandtzaeg holds up a chalk-looking substance: “With this, you can store electricity 20 times as densely as in a lithium battery.”“We're locking up the hydrogen molecules in a solid to basically fix them. We're using a reversible, high-temperature fuel cell, so we're assisting a fuel cell which both can produce hydrogen and electricity in the same cell,” he says.
That means no need to cool the hydrogen down, making it non-flammable and giving it a higher density than an ion-lithium battery"

@CaptObvious Corporations are subject to boycot, individuals to dialog. If an individual Israeli takes a pro-war/apartheid stance online then they should be challenged, but if they are for peace and reconciliation then they should be supported.

- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
@Siegfried and there have been mass shootings outside the USA, don't forget what happened in Norway for example. In the US the mental health and social support infrastructure is weak, so the meme is actualized more often.
- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
@dope Once a meme hits mainstream consciousness it is tough to get it to go away. Columbine out school shootings in the mind of every child of that generation, and since then toxic online forums filled with trolls have kept the idea alive be it "an hero" "unalive yourself" and just generally the nihilistic attitude of if you feel bade enough about yourself to consider killing yourself, you might as well take out some others you hate with you. This is mental illness at its core, but with the enablement of technology and toxic online "community" culture.
Then there are spin off effects of this mentality combined with the impression of the efficacy of terrorism from a psychological imprint perspective, and some narcissists will mass kill for "the cause". Again mental illness at its core, with a different "community" dynamic.
In both of these cases it is the meme, in the original sociology sense of the word, that has caused the rise of the behavior. The cultural condition of alienation and anonymous communication on the rise, combined with overall eroded access to in-person and in-patient mental health services due to the privatized health system, keeps the meme breeding in the alienated cultural class.

@spaduf I love Baudrillard. It is a bit odd that he has a student or TA rrad his lecture for him, but once you realize his French accent is so deep as to be near unintelligible to an American you can appreciate it. The thoughts are exceptional: https://youtu.be/q3kgjjTE0dk?si=XM_lMs6KdhLf6_-n

- Comment on Why not just let people use opioids? It's cheap. People like it. Arguably healthier than weed, alcohol or tobacco. Addiction isn't an issue if you can stay supplied. 1 year ago:
@dope legalize all drugs, provide clean drugs to users via regulated dispensaries or pharmacies, take all money from the drug war and allocate to mental health services including inpatient rehab. It works, check Portugals record on heroin use.
That said, cannabis has a way better afety record than any of the other substances mentioned.
